Hello, Brand Lovers! Did you know that Starbucks, the world’s largest coffeehouse chain, has a language of its own? The Starbucks baristas, the people who make and serve coffee here, use many interesting slang terms to communicate with each other. For example, a "blonde roast" is a light roast coffee, and a "red eye" is a coffee with a shot of espresso added. Some of these terms are even known to the customers like "tall", "grande", "venti", and “trenta”, which are used to refer to the different coffee cup sizes. Awwwwww yea, triple star day is tomorrow!!! But wait, shall we do some back-of-the-cup math? A Starbucks cold brew iced coffee costs me $5.62. I need 200 stars to get a free cold brew iced coffee. On a normal day, my $5.62 order earns me 10.5 stars (5.25% of a free cold brew). On a normal day, my $5.62 order earns me $0.30 cents toward my next free cold brew. On a triple star day, my $5.62 order earns me 31.5 stars (15.75% of a free cold brew). On a triple star day, my $5.62 order earns me $0.89 cents toward my next free cold brew. If this promo is successful and if I were not already planning on going to Starbucks on Tuesday, my triple star day, Starbucks just sparked $5.62 in income in exchange for an additional palm greasing of $0.59. Netting $4.31 from me in the process, on a day when I were not visiting Starbucks. Not that exciting when you peek under the hood…unless you’re Starbucks. P.S. What we can learn from the Starbucks Puppuccino 🐶 ☕ When we go to a coffee shop, the goods and services we receive can largely be categorised into two groups: Expected and Unexpected. In the Expected: good coffee made from freshly ground beans, ambiance, hospitality, comfort, choice, rewards for loyalty. Since the coffee space is a crowded and competitive market, we demand these things as standard. In the Unexpected: Special promotions, partnerships and added value items, the stuff we can't get at home. For instance, the Puppuccino. An espresso cup full of whipped cream. Cost to Starbucks, minimal, almost non-existent. Benefit to consumer: Huge. Now every time I pass a Starbucks with my dog it becomes an event. A reason to go. It's symbolic of the flexibility of this third space, where anyone is welcome - even those with a waggy tail. And of course, if I'm going in for a free 'Pup Cup', I'm going to buy coffee while I'm there. This reinforces spending habits, positive association with the brand, and offers a surprise and delight moment. So next time you're working on a brief, perhaps ask yourself - what are the Expected and Unexpected benefits I can bring to life. Earlier today I posted on what has happened to fast-food prices over the past several years. Answer: up, up and away. The same is true for the menu at Starbucks. Full disclosure: I don't drink any coffee so I had no idea this stuff costs this much! The source of the data, text and graphics is © Visual Capitalist, 2024. All Rights Reserved, used with permission. The graphics look at the price increase of 10 Starbucks menu items from 2014 to 2024. Data comes from Finance Buzz and was updated as of May 2024. Starbucks customers are now shelling out considerably more for food items than in the past. Menu items like bagels, sandwiches and wraps took up the top four spots among the franchise’s menu items that experienced the greatest cost increases. Starbucks cake pops saw the greatest surge in price, jumping 97% in price in the last 10 years from $1.50 to almost $3. Tall mocha frappuccinos increased by 32% since 2014, the steepest price increase among all Starbucks drinks. I have no idea what in the neck a frappuccino even is. Enjoy.

How Starbucks makes you pay more for coffee. There are many great coffee brands out there. But Starbucks is really rich, worth over $100 billion. So, how do they get you to spend more money on coffee and keep coming back? First, they use fancy Italian names to make their stuff seem special. Italy is famous for its food. Everywhere you go in Italy, you can get yummy pasta made with fresh ingredients. From "baristas" to the sizes of their drinks... "venti" and "grande". Starbucks is trying to make you think their coffee is super fancy. Second, Starbucks tries to be friendly with each customer. When you order coffee, they ask for your name. And when your coffee is ready, they say your name. This makes you feel closer to them. Third, Starbucks doesn’t just sell coffee, they sell an experience. You can make your coffee just the way you like it. Their stores have wifi so you can stay, work, or even have meetings. And they have cool new places like the Starbucks Reserve Roastery, the Reserve Bar, and the Reserve Store. It’s like a fun place for people who love coffee. And if you don’t like Starbucks, you can go to smaller coffee shops instead... like Seattle’s Best. Oh, but that used to be owned by Starbucks too. ;) Whether you love or hate Starbucks, you can always learn from their marketing.

Apparently, this is a full drink at Starbucks. It cost me $7.15, and it was handed to me this way simply because I asked for no ice. Starbucks, I'm not sure I'll be back. Is this how customers should be treated? As a veteran employee of over 10 years, this information isn't accurate. I've also verified with Starbucks HQ, and they confirmed that this isn't their policy. This mistake was made by the barista. When you opt for ice, you're choosing to sacrifice that portion of the drink's volume. According to policy, they should compensate by filling the cup to the brim. After a decade with the company, I wouldn't criticize their coffee outright. While some find it too strong or darkly roasted, it's consistently brewed according to strict standards. Starbucks still prioritizes coffee quality, ensuring each cup meets standards. However, the issue lies in their shift towards sugary beverages that feel overpriced and are not filled to the top. ~ Mark Antony (via the 𝕏 platform) Look when you ask for no ice there is volume missing in the recipe. you can get it diluted with more water (just ask) or take it like it is but you are not getting more drink because you asked to remove the ice. Ice is their additional profit margin! There’s plenty of profit margin even in a no ice but full $7.15 drink.

"Wow, this is so much better than Starbucks!" This is one common refrain I often hear from folks unfamiliar with local coffee when they first try it at one of our local coffee tastings. So how does this happen? How does local coffee taste so much better than Starbucks? Outside of personal preferences, there are a couple of reasons for this. Perhaps the biggest driver of this is that to create a uniform quality level at all of their cafes, Starbucks has been accused of "burning" their roasts to ensure you get that signature strong and smooth cup at every location. For Starbucks, unique and special flavors are the enemy when providing a brand standard across thousands of sites worldwide. In contrast, with local roasters, most of which only have 2-3 locations locally, the mission shifts from uniform, repeatable blends to crafting the best possible cup every time. Not having to ensure millions of locations have the same cup allows for local roasters to do things like create single-origin blends or try beans from other parts of the world that Starbucks can't because of the volume needed to offer it to the general public or craft a cup that's true to their vision of how coffee should taste and feel. Everybody is entitled to form their own opinion on coffee. Still, one of the perks of my job is getting to show folks that there's more to coffee than they've been shown their whole lives, that the coffee world can be something as interesting as the wine world, and that you don't have to settle for burnt and bitter coffee.
