Here are 3 things I almost travel with and immediately regret for not packing when I forget them and 3 things I bring that never see the light of day while I’m traveling. My list of must-haves: A high-quality reef-safe sunscreen – The sun is no joke out here, and protecting your skin while preserving the coral reefs is a win-win. Lightweight, breathable fabrics – Nothing speaks comfort under the Caribbean sun like linen or lightweight cotton. A versatile sarong or wrap – It doubles as a beach blanket, a skirt, a dress, and even a shade provider. A true Swiss Army knife of clothing. My list of things to skip: Heavy makeup – Let your skin breathe and embrace the island glow. A tinted moisturizer with SPF might be all you need. Too many shoes – Honestly, flip-flops during the day and a comfortable pair of sandals for the evening are all you need. The Caribbean is all about laid-back vibes. Bulky towels – Most resorts and beachfront hotels provide these, and they can take up a ton of space in your luggage. What to Pack for a Safari: Essential Gear and Tips Embarking on a safari to Kruger National Park for example promises to be an exhilarating adventure amidst Africa’s stunning wildlife and landscapes, but not having the right wardrobe will definitely demper your bucket list experience. Questions like,' long pants or short ones, boots or sandals, tank tops or sweater tops, bright colours or neutral ones, are some really important points to cover. At Gems of Africa Safari and Tours, we’ve compiled a comprehensive packing list for your safari trip, complete with essential gear and tips to help you make the most of your journey. Safari Clothing - Sunny Africa is not always hot and sunny - it can get really brisky during early morning safari drives and rainy seasons are wet and muddy, so planning of your wardrobe should include some warmer wear. - Neutral colours are always best. High-contrasted colours like reds, blues, yellows and pinks can appear threatening to certain animals as it can be associated with how predators are avoided in nature. Flashy and glittery items can illicit a response of fear in animals and the tsetse fly is also attracted to blue colours. Our suggestion then is to rather have you blend in with nature with a tan, khaki or green coloured wardrobe. - It can be really brisky bordering on cold during early morning safari drives. We suggest a puffer jacket for when temperatures are really low or alternatively layering of shirts with a dri-mac type jacket/ fleece top over everything that can be taken off as the temp rises. - A light-weight linen or cotton long sleeve shirt is a must - easy to diversify as to the changing weather of the day and also works really well over sleeveless shirts. - Long pants are ideal for early morning safari drives and boma evenings, it keeps the legs warm and the bugs at bay. Quick-dry travel pants are ideal for watching the weight of luggage and it doesn't wrinkle either. Safari pants with side pockets come in really handy for the extras like lip ice, sunscreen, phone etc that one carries around without wanting to take an extra backpack just for those items. - Safaris are more about comfort than style so our suggestion would be to rather dress so you can get the most enjoyment from safaris and bush walks than worrying about spoiling expensive garments. But, having said that - comfort can also be fashionable and trendy. - Leather boots with proper grip and ample ankle support are suggested for bush walks and sandals can be worn for warmer afternoon chills at the reserve or during sundowners. Make sure that the boots you bring with are already worn in as to prevent blisters and unnecessary sore feet.
