A very interesting paper which creates a new self-supervised loss function by combining the Mumford-Shah functional with the CNN loss function. https://lnkd.in/guhwAwnj It is based on 3 observations: 1) the Mumford-Shah functional is non-differentiable because it is based on a characteristic function which is non-differentiable 2) the Softmax function is differentiable 3) the Softmax function is very similar in behavior to the characteristic function and can be used in its place thus making the Mumford-Shah functional differentiable. The resulting differentiable function can then be minimized using the Backpropagtion algorithm.

We have now begun to operate from ’the’ diabolic split. Page 14 The split dates back to the first time when the unwanted, unbearable was experienced by the psyche; and as a defence, as protection and as its survival the split was created. It was created just so that no-one ever sees the real self, which it now considers not-enough, alone, damaged, helpless, hopeless….. Page 14 last para If we do not learn to integrate these scattered components, then these scattered components learn to accommodate the opposition, ‘now’ it is only a matter-of-time that we become the opposite!!
