The oft-heard statement of "the shooting was domestic-related and there is no threat to the public" creates a false narrative that domestic violence is comprised of one-off incidents and the next family is safe from it. But we know one of the biggest correlations to experiencing violence later in life, either as a victim or a person choosing harm, is exposure to domestic violence (DV). Up to 10 million children witness DV each year (ncadv.org; Chapple, 2003; Gover, Kaukinen & Fox, 2008). As recent reports have been shedding light on, including Crain's, "while incidents of non-fatal domestic violence shootings have decreased from their peak in 2021, domestic violence related homicide and, specifically, homicides committed with firearms in Chicago increased in 2022." There is an ongoing significant threat to the public and, as many advocates have said before, we need to look at domestic violence as not something we keep within the walls of our homes but address as a public health crisis. #domesticviolence #publichealth #publichealtheducation

"Stalking" is the term commonly used to refer to a purposeful pattern of behavior directed towards an individual by another that results in the individual fearing for their safety or for the safety of a third party. The behaviors can involve following, monitoring, observing, surveilling, threatening, or communicating to or about, a person, or interfering with a person's property. #stalking can escalate and ultimately result in actual physical harm to its intended subject. In 2019/20, females aged 17 years and younger were more likely to be victims of abduction, rape, sexual assault, child trafficking, and attempted common robbery. However, males aged 17 years and younger were more like to be victims of murder, assault with GBH, attempted murder, common robbery and common assault. Rape cases for children increased by 6,3 percentage points between 2015/16 and 2019/20, whilst both common assault and assault with grievous bodily harm (GBH) decreased by 2,1 and 3,5 percentage points respectively.
