Within any three-year timeframe, adult Canadians encounter over 35 million everyday legal issues, with over 20% taking no action to address them meaningfully due to barriers such as financial constraints, time constraints, delays, lack of information, and limited service availability. 🚨The APT welcomes the first General Comment by the UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture (SPT) on the concept of places of deprivation of liberty. The SPT stresses the importance of a comprehensive definition to effectively prevent torture. Ensuring that monitoring bodies are able to visit all forms of deprivation of liberty is crucial for safeguarding human rights and preventing ill-treatment. There is a large number of communities that are under served and working without call triage protocols. Many of these agencies erroneously propagate the myth that the community simply cannot afford the training or programs needed. This myth needs to be put to rest. Call triage is a standard that all communities deserve and must insist on from their communication centers. E911 systems struggled to spread until a national standard was established. This Best Practices goes a long way to setting that standard approach to answering 9-1'1 emergency calls.

The municipality of Amsterdam, the Blijf Groep and the police of Amsterdam are organizing this conference in collaboration with the European Family Justice Center Alliance for professionals in the judicial and care sector who (may) have to deal in their work with these very dangerous forms of gender-based and domestic violence. The conference will delve deeper into the basic principles, dynamics and impact of femicide, intimate terror & coercive control and non-fatal strangulation. Ultimately, participants will have the necessary tools to recognize the change of a possible femicide situation in stage, to discuss it, to provide the right support and to conduct criminal investigation. With this knowledge, we will soon be able to tackle femicide more effectively. We all expect to go to work without threats of violence, coercion or abuse. But right now, there are an estimated 41,000 people living in modern slavery in Australia, and our modern slavery laws are not working to stop the abuse. That's why we, alongside 40 human rights groups, unions, faith groups and academics, have sent an open letter calling on the Albanese Government to urgently strengthen the laws to require large companies to address modern slavery risks in their global operations and supply chains.
