This #TriviaTuesday we're learning about Midwest Food Bank 🌽 Midwest Food Bank volunteers are more than hands and feet; they are fundamental to the success of the organization. They are structured to provide service opportunities and operate through the work of volunteers; they collect, sort, pack, and distribute food and disaster relief donations, a reminder every day that this mission could not be achieved without them. In 2022, more than 30,000 volunteers put in service hours to the equivalent of over 175 full-time employees! The service of these dedicated volunteers allows Midwest Food Bank to operate efficiently while keeping administrative costs low. They gain the unique perspective that worldwide hunger is prevalent, and their efforts can make a difference. In 2005, Midwest Food Bank saw first-hand that they could deliver hope and support to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. They decided to increase their capacity and work toward improving their disaster support coverage. This allowed them to serve more people more effectively! They also have a fleet of trucks and volunteer drivers standing ready. Food donations are picked up from across the country, delivered to their facilities, and distributed to those in need. How many hours of service did Midwest Food Bank's volunteers put in in 2022? EM community! Let me tell you about an amazing VOAD called Project:Camp. They set up pop-up, trauma-informed day camps for children in areas that have been affected by disaster. They are currently on the ground in New Mexico setting up one such camp in response to the wildfires. Unlike most NGOs, they put children's care and well-being at the forefront of response. I love their mission and happy to be getting more involved.
