Life is funny. Recently, I've been relishing in the joy of spending time with my son Manny, as we both take part in this upcoming theatre production of NEWSIEs, offered by Shine On Performing Arts (SOPA). But an interesting thing happened along the way - I was reminded of a powerful lesson in leadership and inclusivity. We are fortunate to be part of SOPA, a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering a love for musical theatre in individuals of all ages and abilities. SOPA stands out not only for its captivating performances but also for its inclusive approach, offering opportunities for everyone, regardless of age or experience, to participate in all aspects of production, whether onstage or off. As we work together on this production, I’m reminded of the transformative impact that embracing different perspectives and working towards a common goal, augmented by great leadership can have. Each cast member, set designer, choreographer, prop maker, costume designer, tech crew member brings their unique talents to the production. We all receive “notes” from our director to improve and we all provide feedback on our view for the scene. Problems are solved collaboratively and quickly because no matter the hurdle – the show must go on. It works because we are all focused on the common goal and our director owns the vision, treats everyone with respect, and is decisive. This lesson holds true not only in the realm of community theatre but also in the workplace. By capturing your team’s mindshare to focus on the common goal, and fostering an environment of inclusivity and collaboration, great leaders harness the full potential of their workforce, drive innovation, and achieve success. In the same way that the Newsies unite behind Jack against adversity, and SOPA brings together a broad crew to put on a great show, teams in the workplace can overcome challenges and achieve extraordinary results when they rally behind their leader and work together towards a shared vision. No matter the challenge, great leadership and the principles of diversity and collaboration serve as guiding lights, that shine on the path to greatness. Time is such a strange concept. Every week, when Friday comes around I find myself asking ‘how is it the weekend again?’ And the previous week just fades into the past. But today on my 1 Year Anniversary at SINE Digital, I find it crazy to think where the last year has gone. I feel like I blinked and I’m already a year in to my job with so much more to come, I feel like I’m only just getting started. So here’s 10 things I’ve learnt this past year! 1.⁠ ⁠If you don’t feel like you’re in an environment where you can thrive, you can literally just leave and start again because life is too short to be in a place you don’t feel like you belong. Something I did right before moving to SINE. 2.⁠ ⁠You are your greatest achievement. You should be proud of how far you’ve come compared to the person you were 365 days ago. 3.⁠ ⁠Comparison is the thief of joy. The only person you should compare yourself to is yesterday’s version of yourself. 4.⁠ ⁠Blank Street Coffee is way too expensive to have one everyday. 5.⁠ ⁠You will do your best work when surrounded by likeminded people who aren’t afraid to challenge your ways of thinking to make you better. 6.⁠ ⁠I clearly can’t work without Daniel Swift in the same office. 7.⁠ ⁠If you love what you do, work will only ever sometimes feel like work. Being able to work in the theatre industry is something I have always aspired to do and having the ability to be a voice in meetings with West End and Broadway Producers is something that I would never have imagined before the age of 25, yet here we are! 8.⁠ ⁠It’s important to have things to do outside your 9-5. In the last year, I’ve picked up running with my first 10K event next weekend, joined a local theatre group and seen 30 shows in the West End (because working in theatre advertising just wasn’t quite enough). You need things to break up the monotony of the daily commute and busy working life and these are what make you the person who you are. 9.⁠ ⁠Take every opportunity that is presented to you and absolutely run with it. 10.⁠ ⁠Just be yourself and people will love and respect you so much more than trying to be something or someone that you’re not. As I head into my second year at SINE, I want to thank everyone who has supported me on this crazy journey so far. I can’t wait to see what this year has in store as I continue my journey working with an amazing team on New York & Broadway projects as part of a growing US Team 🇺🇸🥳🙏🏼

#ThrowbackThursday to the last time I acted on stage ❤. Playing a Texan gal in a two-hander play, onstage constantly from curtain up to curtain down 🤪. I always felt extremely comfortable onstage, like anything could happen and I could handle it. Of course, there were nerves before I went on, but when the lights went down and the audience hushed, I was relaxed and in control. I was always fascinated by the split focus of the actor's brain 😵. You're in character, you really are. You're experiencing and feeling the action of the play in character. But there's another part of the brain that's still you, managing the theatrical practicalities. Where you need to stand, what props you need and dealing with any issues that arise. I've dealt with all sorts. Actors not being on stage, all the furniture missing, actors forgetting their lines, me forgetting my lines, costume malfunctions, being naked . . . er, what? Yep, none of it bothered me 😁. Walking into a theatre still gives me goosebumps. It's like a hallowed place where magic happens 🤩. I'm a full-time voice actor now and I get MUCH more work, so it suits me a lot better. I'm partial to eating now and then, you know 😅. But, I'll always miss the thrill of the stage ❤ How about you? Do you want to work on a documentary about a professional teenage drag queen? In 2019 I found myself pondering this question. A director friend (Maribeth Romslo) asked if I'd be interested in working on such a project. Honestly I was nervous about the subject matter. What if I couldn't relate to the subject? What if it was too edgy? Not edgy enough? But I was inclined to say "yes" for this exact reason. I figured it would be exciting to see what happened! So that's what I did. The project started as a feature-length idea - following this teenager around as they balanced finishing high school and performing in drag. But after filming one performance in early 2020, COVID-19 changed the project into a short film. I watched the footage multiple times before I even started to cut. Much to my relief, I quickly (easily) found a personal connection with the subject and became invested in telling the best story possible. Here's how I did it: 1. I made a really solid first cut that was very linear / similar to how the footage was shot, but shorter. I edited! 2. I took interview lines that I thought were interesting and let them "be free" instead of keeping them stuck in the linear structure. I dabbled a lot in this phase and eventually sent a cut to the director for feedback. I knew the film wasn't "there" yet but had also tried a fair amount of ways to move the needle and the cut wasn't moving. 3. Maribeth expanded on what drew her to the story - the relationship between the main subject and their mother. The next phase became Maribeth interviewing those two, but in a conversational, gentle way. Hopefully resulting in some audio that could help shape the short. 4. The interview was a great idea, turns out. With numerous lines that spoke both to the child-parent dynamic and the larger LGBTQIA+ landscape, we ended up replacing most of the original interview audio with these new clips. Suddenly the needle had moved. 5. After some brilliant color work by Added Element and sound work / design by Daniel Kramer, the film was ready to hit the festivals and be out in the world. My favorite part of the whole process, aside from the finished film, is looking back at how I felt before starting the project and comparing it to how I feel when I watch the final product. I'm proud of the wholesome sweetness that permeates this short about a professional teenage drag queen. Those are words I did not expect to say when starting the project. Each factor (T, P, W, V, A, G) is scored on a scale from 1 to 10, where 10 is the highest. Each attribute is crucial, contributing equally to the makings of a great cast member. It's a blend of skill, dedication, adaptability, and connection that elevates a performance from good to unforgettable. The maximum score is 10, which would indicate the almost impossible situation of a perfect performer. Of course, this equation is more of a playful thought experiment than a casting guide. The magic of performance lies in the unique blend of attributes each performer brings, often defying quantification. Yet, it invites us to appreciate the multifaceted talents and hard work that define excellence in the arts. Let's celebrate the diversity of skills and qualities in our industry!
