Do You Know Contacts in Maine's Outdoor Sector?
I have an aversion to cold calls and thankfully I have a warm network of colleagues. Last month marks Maine's outdoor and tourism sectors' approval of the Maine Trails Bond, which allocates $30 million over the next four years to design, develop, and maintain trails statewide.
In light of this, the Callosum team is eager to connect with key organizations that will be pivotal for the initiative. Our expertise in purpose-driven brand strategy can significantly contribute to the success of these projects. Specifically, we are looking to engage with the following entities:
- Natural Resources Council of Maine (NRCM)
- Maine Office of Outdoor Recreation
- University of Maine (UMaine)
- Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission
- Maine Tourism Association
- Friends of Acadia
- Visit Maine
- Maine International Trade Center
- Maine Outdoor Economy Summit
Do you happen to know someone in any of these organizations and would be willing to make an introduction for me? If yes, I'd be grateful if you'd comment or DM and I'll follow up. Thanks in advance. I'm happy to return the favor!

Some residents may prioritize industries that align with the area's natural beauty, such as eco-tourism or outdoor recreation. Others might emphasize the importance of services that cater to the local community, such as grocery stores or healthcare facilities. What types of businesses do you think would be a good fit for the Lake of Bays community?

Imagination Activist | Building the Collective Moral Imagination | Founder and CEO at Moral Imaginations | Public Speaker | Edmund Hilary Fellow | Foresight Institute Fellow 2021 | Climate Activist
Come and join the Imagination Activist and the Barefoot Lawyer Patrick Andrews in the forest in Hazel Hill for two days exploring Wildness in Organisations.
We have both worked with organisations large and small across the public sector and corporate sector on embedding the perspective of nature into governance, and will create a space for people to bring their problems, ideas and case studies to work on together.
My journey with nature and what I call 'wild governance' started in 2017 when I was in New Zealand on a month-long trip to work on new forms of governance with the Enspiral network. While I was there, I took part in the Edmund Hillary Fellowship (EHF) launch where we discussed the River Whanganui being granted personhood, something that had just made it into legislation that year. The gathering was co-facilitated and hosted by Maori elders, and the Maori worldview was at the heart of our conversations.
In the closing session, an insight was shared with the group: if rivers can have personhood, why can't they sit on the board of organisations? A group of us came together to explore this concept, and how we could make it a reality. We worked together over the year of 2017, fleshing out the idea, with some of the group taking forward thinking about nature based tokens and economics and currencies, and others more focused on the cultural and governance aspects.
Various projects emerged from this moment and thinking: Moral Imaginations was one of them, Earth Equity was another, and on the ground work with Maori communities and organisations in the region of Whanganui and Mount Taranaki. Since then, I've seen more and more 'nature in governance' thinking sprouting around the world. I met Paul Powlesland, the 'tree lawyer' and Brontie Maria Ansell here in the UK who started Lawyers for Nature and worked with Faith In Nature to appoint Nature onto the board. And out of that came the new organisation Nature On The Board which is helping other organisations follow their lead. There is a bigger group in the UK popularising and spreading 'Rights of Nature' thinking which we are a part of, and slowly, culture is shifting and the movement is growing.
How do you bridge the wildness that exists in nature with the ways of being and doing and leading inside organisations? What are ways you could shift your practice, and your leadership, now?

If you can't make it but you would like to, get in touch because we plan to host more of these over the year.

Inspired by nature | Re-imagining organisations and their governance | Barefoot lawyer
We need a leap of imagination to guide us, in any sort of healthy state, through the change humanity and the planet is going through.
It seems most unlikely that such a leap will come from within our large institutions. Their workers struggle to free themselves from the worldview that enabled those institutions to succeed in the first place but now holds them, and us, back.
If you want imagination to thrive, you need to create spaces where people feel free to be, to dream, to tune in, to connect with their inner sense of what is true, beautiful and good. As George Orwell said, “The imagination, like certain wild animals, will not breed in captivity.”
How can we cultivate wildness, in our organisations and ourselves, and let our imaginations run free?
This is the question I will be exploring in a workshop in early October, held in a wild wood in southern England. I am delighted to be joined as a collaborator by Phoebe Tickell. Phoebe is a systems thinker and renegade biologist whose work uses imaginative practice to bring the more-than-human perspective into decision making.
If you would like a chance to explore and play with your own inner wildness, why not join us? We still have a few places left.

"Why Far South Chicago" Series. This is to highlight why our municipal leadership should consider Chicago's far south side as part of its economic growth plan.
Tuesday Edition: Amenities
Did you know that the 26-mile Cal-Sag Trail stretches as far west starting at Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve and the Desplaines River east to Calumet City Prairie and Marsh Nature Preserve? Did you also know that Chicago's far south's southern border connects with the Cal-Sag Trail, including the 6-mile historic Major Taylor Trail?
Fun facts from the Cal-Sag Trail website (https://lnkd.in/ejqTfzN3):
1) The Trail connects five regional multi-use trails, creating a Chicago Southland trail system that stretches more than 100 miles.
2) America’s CEOs rank public greenways second in importance when choosing a new location, just behind access to skilled workers.
3) Small business owners consider recreational opportunities and green space as their top priority when choosing a new location.
4) The Cal-Sag Trail links together three marinas, three golf courses, and six nature and forest preserves.
5) The Cal-Sag Trail connects more than 185,000 residents that live within a 1-mile radius of the trail; and within 15 minutes, nearly 1.2 million residents in the southland (including Chicago's far south side).
Yesterday I wrote a post about focusing on developing community assets and enterprises within Grimsby.
But what does this mean?
It refers to a strategic approach aimed at building and enhancing resources and businesses that are of value to the local community.
This can include a range of projects and initiatives:
1. Community Assets: These are properties or spaces that are owned or managed by community organisations for public benefit.
Examples include community centres, parks, libraries, and sports facilities.
Developing these assets means improving, expanding, or creating new spaces that serve the community's needs and interests.
2. Community Enterprises: These are businesses that are set up, owned, and run by the local community. They often reinvest profits back into the community. Examples can include local co-operatives, social enterprises, and community-run shops or cafes.
Developing these enterprises means supporting the growth of businesses that not only serve the local economy but also contribute to the social and communal well-being of Grimsby.
The focus on these areas implies that initiatives and investments in Grimsby should prioritise projects that bring tangible benefits to the community, boost the local economy, and enhance the quality of life for its residents.
This is happening a lot in Grimsby but not everyone is aware of these brilliant community organisations.
I am joining one of these organisations next Tuesday at an event they have organised "Our Future Open House 2023" in collaboration with East Marsh United
I attended last year and came away inspired and humbled.
I believe there are still tickets available.
