Media Relations and Marketing Communications Strategy to Help Attorneys, Business Owners, Consultants Get in the News, Attract Clients and Grow | Speaker | Networking Guru | Guest on 9 of 16 Top Legal Marketing Podcasts
What's your "go-to" question at networking events? Mine is "What was the highlight of your year so far? What would not have happened for your client, if you were not involved?" In American business culture, people are not supposed to brag. It's about "the team." That's hogwash in networking. When I ask these questions I learn: The kinds of clients you work with The types of problems you solve The various solutions you offer Then, no matter what the person says, I follow up with "That's so interesting. Tell me how you do that, in case I know someone who might be interested in how you work." Now the new contact can be more granular and brag, which they don't get to do often enough. Everyone loves to talk about themselves. Looking forward to TWO networking events today: Carly Hariton invited me to her #BNI chapter, plus Women Owned Law is having a cocktail reception, hosted by Helene Pangalos and Paige Zandri. #networking #networkingtips

This was an interesting question from our webinar last week run by Eileen Donaghey
Business development & marketing consultant | Networking training | Showing you how to develop a personal brand like my Afternoon Tea Expert® brand.
"How do you deal with people at networking events who don't want to speak with you as you're not senior enough." This was a question that was raised at the Business Development training webinar I ran on Monday with Legal Women UK magazine. I told the story of when I was in my early 20s at a networking event in Dublin and I remember a lady leaning in to look at my badge as I approached, and then waved her hand in front of my face and said 'no sorry' as she turned away. Talk about crushing! 😮 Here's how I cope with going to events when people haven't wanted to speak with me: 💡 Remind myself that it's not personal. There is always going to be someone less interested in speaking with you. Maybe they have someone in mind they are trying to speak with. Remember it's nothing personal and don't let negative interactions dampen your shine. 💡Try and buddy up with someone more senior in your firm and observe from them how they talk and interact with others. 💡 Go with a colleague or friend. It's easier when you have a wing-man. 💡Focus on the positives. Find people who are open to conversations and practice talking to new people that way. What advice would you give to the person who asked that question?

I am nothing without my personal "board of advisors," most of whom are other women with whom I have grown up in my career, some of whom are former or current clients of mine, and others are elder stateswomen whom I admire. In the Lead is an organization and community within GS Private Wealth that brings women together to share ideas and empower each other. Here are a few tips from In the Lead on how to build your own board of advisors.
Networking is a powerful tool women can leverage to build trusted connections that can be invaluable resources, especially when looking for a sounding board for new opportunities. How do you go about creating strong networks, while also fostering long-lasting, authentic relationships? Here are a few ways you can maximize access to those genuine connections when it matters most. 1. Exchange expertise: Networking shouldn’t feel transactional. It’s an opportunity to share knowledge and exchange ideas in ways that feel balanced, so you not only lift other women up but build valuable relationships in the process. 2. Learn from the best: Reach out to investors and entrepreneurs, both within and outside of your industry, who can expand your knowledge base and give you helpful perspective on projects. It’s important to build a circle of women who complement your own strengths and weaknesses. 3. Talk openly: Use your network as a safe space to strategize and have vulnerable discussions with peers and those with more experience than you. They can offer constructive feedback to help fine-tune your business plan or sales pitch. I speak with lawfirms on a daily basis about their struggles and priorities. When it comes down to their firm's online presence I sometimes hear; “We don’t need LinkedIn. We’re a small firm and get clients from our network and word of mouth.” Here’s why that thinking is a mistake: 1️⃣ It’s not just for lead generation: Many lawyers assume social media is only about attracting new clients. In reality, LinkedIn is essential for positioning your firm, building credibility, and establishing your brand. It’s a platform for showcasing your expertise, values, and unique strengths—crucial for long-term success. 2️⃣ Expand your reach: Even small firms need to think big. LinkedIn isn’t just for large firms—it’s a powerful tool to connect with potential clients beyond your immediate network. 3️⃣ Boost your credibility: A polished LinkedIn profile enhances your firm’s credibility. For a small firm, it’s crucial for establishing trust and demonstrating that you’re a professional and reliable choice in the legal field. 4️⃣ Attract top talent: According to research by the National Association for Law Placement (NALP), about 90% of lawyers look for job opportunities online, with LinkedIn being a key platform in that search. If you’re not on LinkedIn, you’re missing out on a significant pool of potential candidates. 5️⃣ Gain a competitive edge: Don’t let your size limit your impact. A robust LinkedIn presence sets you apart from competitors and highlights your unique strengths. So, don’t underestimate LinkedIn. It’s essential for positioning your firm, building your reputation, and attracting top talent. #Smallfirmbigimpact #LinkedInforlawyers #Credibility #Attracttalent #Legalnetworking
