Are you familiar with NFO controls within NIST 800-171? NIST states "The control or control enhancement is expected to be routinely satisfied by nonfederal organizations without specification." in regards to NFO controls. Though tailored out of the moderate baseline, organizations are expected to adhere to these controls. There are 61 NFO controls that are identified in NIST 800-171 revision 2. These controls are not meant as an addition to the stress organizations feel in preparation for CMMC but it is to serve as a foundation to the policies, procedures and documentation nonfederal entities are expected to have for a basic security program. Satisfying these controls also assists in satisfying requirements within the 110 controls required for CMMC Level 2. The security requirements in NIST SP 800-171 and the source controls in SP 800-53 are designed to be technology- and policy-neutral. There is a good reason for this. Organizations that use NIST’s standards and guidelines have a diverse collection of missions and business functions that include a variety of different technology components, systems, and services. The requirements and controls must be designed with sufficient generality to meet every customer’s security needs. Platform specificity is achieved through the customer’s implementation at the system and system component level including the environment of operation. A disciplined and well thought out implementation process will determine the ultimate success or failure of an organization’s security program. ISO 27001 requires you to create policies, security objectives, etc that are "appropriate" for your organization and "compatible with the strategic direction" of your organization. It goes on to require you to assess your own risks, and treat those risks. Finally in the Annex, it requires "secure authentication". If any organization is able to truly do all of that and still not include MFA in their definition of "secure authentication" in 2023/2024 (and for the next x years of their strategic cycle) then I wish them good fortune in the wars to come 🤣.
