It was a delight to contribute as a panelist at the 2024 OU Women & Gender Studies Center for Social Justice's Teach OUt On Race Conference on "Navigating the Intersection of AI, Technology, and Race: Addressing Bias and Promoting Equity" this week! I'd like extend a special thanks to Dr. Rodney Bates, Kayla Storrs, MPH, Adisha Waghmarae, and the Teach OUt On Race Committee for organizing this deeply enriching and interdisciplinary conference on AI ethics.
Teaming up with OU IT assistant director and seasoned expert Millard B. Latimer II, we addressed the critical need to confront bias and promote equity in AI. Our conversation underscored the importance of strengthening AI literacy among policymakers, industry leaders, and the general public. Our seminar also delved into strategies to regulate racial equity and bias mitigation in tomorrow's machine learning models, aligning with the Teach OUt On Race committee's shared mission of making AI accessible, interpersonal, and helpful to all global identities. We firmly believe that advocates in the arts and social sciences, including psychology, philosophy, sociology, and ethics, belong in the room where influential AI decisions are made.
Given AI's profound impact on our lives and its trajectory of exponential growth, AI literacy and awareness are becoming increasingly vital skills for navigating the digital age. Let's work together to enable informed decisions about AI use and regulation for a more equitable future.

I'll bet this was an interesting presentation! AI and its own bias is impacting DEI in unexpected ways. Glad to have a stellar team addressing.
