The company official noted that "the micro AUV market is relatively niche, but new startups are beginning to pop up, and it's likely a similar trend to the proliferation of uncrewed aerial systems and uncrewed ground combat systems will soon emerge in the naval domain." We will see more and more companies realize the potential for these systems to completely disrupt maritime operations. The NSIN X-Force Fellowship and NSIN Capstone programs often complement one another to deliver even greater impact on strategic initiatives. Case in point, the Origami unmanned aerial system (UAS) project, which delivered a prototype UAS that changes shape to adapt to different needs. The project started as an idea in a NSIN Capstone program at University of Missouri-Kansas City. After a summer of further iteration in the NSIN X-Force Fellowship, it became a functioning prototype. Dr. Corey Bergsrud, an Engineer at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division who oversaw the work of the students, shared his thoughts on how the programs made the difference to bring the concept to life. The U.S. Navy is preparing to put industry systems through their paces as the sea service looks for new underwater sensors, automated target recognition capabilities and other tools to protect assets and perform other critical missions. Technology Operational Experimentation Event 25.2 is part of a campaign led by the Office of Naval Research-Global that will look at emerging tech to support operational objectives related to “subsea and seabed warfare,” according to a new sources-sought notice. One of the three focus areas will be on capabilities that can monitor and “defend underwater infrastructure and facilities to deny adversary undersea reconnaissance via emplaced devices or underwater vehicles.” That includes sensors and tools for “automated target recognition,” per an attachment to the notice.

With Defense beacon be the first to know !! Last month, on March 19th, an intriguing event unfolded in Tel Aviv, Israel - "the Maritime Space Conference 2024". This event delved into various maritime facets, featuring presentations from esteemed Israeli defense industry leaders such as Elbit Systems, IAI - Israel Aerospace Industries and ELTA Systems Ltd. Among the notable presentations, Saar Koursh, leading Elbit Systems naval business unit, offered insights into current and future Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) trends. Particularly, Koursh highlighted the Naval warfare paradigm shift catalyzed by Ukraine's utilization of one-way attack Uncrewed Surface Vehicles (OWA USVs) against the Russian fleet. This pivotal event spurred Western navies to emulate this capability, leading to recent urgent operational requirements such as the Production Ready, Inexpensive Maritime Expeditionary (#PRIME) small Unmanned Surface Vehicle (sUSV) and Collaborative Intercept capability (with a range of 500 to 1000 nautical miles) issued by the US Defense Innovation Unit and the UK Royal Navy's PJ VANDAL program. The latter initiative aims to develop an integrated set of USVs capable of executing multi-axis attacks on vessels both at sea and alongside. Koursh forecasts a significant trend in the forthcoming years, wherein Western navies will undergo extensive unmanned vessel equipping programs across various categories. Elbit Systems, aligning with this trajectory, is actively developing its own capabilities in one-way attack Uncrewed Surface Vehicles, as hinted in the presentation. In the final slide that was presented (see slide below) an undisclosed unmanned vessel appeared, marking a departure from Elbit's known portfolio. The dimensions provided alongside suggest that the new USV is currently under development. Additional information regarding Elbit Systems recent development activity in Uncrewed Surface Vehicles (USVs) was provided by Defense News on February 1, 2024. In War on the Rocks, I write about what--and how--lessons on unmanned systems in Ukraine and the Red Sea apply to the operational needs of the United States Navy operating at and from the sea. At sea, the challenges of rearming a ship, the longer tactical distances at hand, and the limitations on afloat size, weight, and power all create crosscutting constraints that shape how drones can be designed and used as part of an ocean-going battle force. Seen in that lens, the key technical requirements for naval operations from the sea threaten to change the alchemy of cost and plenty that analysts find so appealing about drone use from the shore. In their current iteration, unmanned systems are an important development but so far fundamentally additive for a Navy that remains dependent on the dominant weapons system of its domain, long-range precision fires. The future hybrid fleet should emerge from this central thesis: the missile still matters.
