How I meet VPs as an associate level: (the 1 simple thing you have to do) Ask. Before I landed my current role, I was a contractor. At some point, I knew that gig would end and I’d be back to square one. So.. I hatched a plan. My plan was to get on as many networking calls with as many hiring managers as I could with the goal of landing a role I enjoyed. So, I leveraged our directory and started sending hail marys, emailing anyone that would open them. What’s crazy? People answered. From associate level, all the way to VP. Sure I got left on a read a bunch, but a lot of people responded and were happy to chat. I ended up sharing virtual coffee with over 20 new people in a month. Eventually, a role opened up through a team I knew previously and that’s where we’re at. I started making those connections to get hired. I made some new friends along the way & learned about parts of a company doing about $7 Billion in revenue. I still do it because I love it. I also learned that people are willing to help As long as you ask. But you have to put yourself in front of them. #networking #connect

Sitting next to a high performer makes you better. It used to be that when you started a new sales role, you sat next to someone doing the same job. Learning from your neighbor was the best part of onboarding. If you were lucky enough to sit next to a high performer, you received the best onboarding of your career. “I would listen to John’s calls and learn more from observing than any training,” said any salesperson who ever sat next to a high performer. According to a study by the Kellogg School of Management, “sitting near high performers boosted performance in coworkers by 15 percent.” This is called the spillover factor. Unfortunately, starting a new role now is a 100% remote experience for most sellers. The typical onboarding is done via video conferencing, listening to calls, and reviewing endless collateral. I feel for anyone having to go through virtual onboarding, followed by a lack of ongoing mentoring. For those looking for better onboarding and ongoing support, there are a few options to consider. 1) If you’re 100% remote now, ask to visit HQ or a regional office at least 1x per Quarter. 2) Seek out a mentor, internally or externally, and meet 2x per month. 3) Invest in professional and career development; this is a benefit your company should reimburse you for. 4) Join a community If you’re in Raleigh Durham area, please join us a Sale HQ a coselling community for high performing sellers and sales team. One of the most important people-first lessons I ever learned and embraced was the necessity of building and maintaining one-to-one conversations and relationships with fellow employees and team members. Not just direct reports, or my fellow marketing and sales team members. Everyone in the company. Because everyone in a company matters, regardless of title, position, skillset, or daily tasks and responsibilities. As the marketing director for a busy SaaS reseller and with more than fifteen years of experience as a digital marketer, I've embraced the knowledge that inspiration and themes worthy of sharing with customers often come from interactions with engineers, tech support, and operations—not just the sales team! These conversations and relationships have to look outside of the workplace. Do we share any hobbies? A passion for music? Book lovers? Fellow mountain bikers or tennis players? Forging bonds can start with work topics, but reinforcing those bonds requires more: affinity, shared perceptions, shared interests, and trust. Leading a team or a company is one thing. Truly knowing the people you work with is a different ball of wax. Owners, leaders, team members, and everyone up and down the line all play crucial roles in creating a people-first workplace.
