*2023 Sport Sponsorship Trends* • 27,192 deals were announced in 2023, with soccer accounting for the highest volume of deals in the period • Golf has seen a 30.2 per cent in deal volume year on year when comparing like for like data, while Rugby League has seen an increase of 43.8 per cent year on year. • Spend increased by 0.5 per cent compared to 2022 . • The Financial Services sector was the highest spending sector in 2022 but spend from this sector has fallen in 2023. • The Travel & Tourism sector has increased spending by 25.6 per cent while the Clothing & Accessories sector has increased spending by 27.5 per cent. 🏆 As we immerse ourselves in the excitement of the UEFA EURO 2024, CONMEBOL Copa America 2024, Wimbledon, Formula 1, and the Paris Olympics, I'm reminded of how brands and sports have become inextricably linked over the years. Let’s go back to Adi Dassler's genius move in the 1954 World Cup. When Germany defeated the "invincible" Hungarians, adidas didn't just witness a historic win – they became a household name in football (please note that I did not write soccer). That's the power of sports sponsorship done right. Fast forward to today, and we see brands like Mastercard evolving their strategies. What started as a way to showcase global presence has transformed into offering "priceless experiences." It's no longer just about logo placement; it's about creating memorable moments for fans. But here's where it gets really interesting: Mastercard doesn't just throw money at any sport. They use data to make strategic decisions, recognizing that while sport consistently ranks among the top eight passions globally, preferences vary dramatically by market. From football to skiing, golf to tennis, and even e-sports - Brands tailors its approach to each unique audience. (And yes, for those wondering, lucha libre counts too!) The HEINEKEN Company has taken a similar approach with the UEFA Champions League, creating experiences that go beyond the pitch. And let's not forget the countless companies hosting golf tournaments or sponsoring prestigious events like Wimbledon. But here's where I see a massive opportunity: amateur sports. 🏋️♀️🏃♂️🚴♀️ Imagine the impact of more companies supporting local sports initiatives in the communities they serve. It's a chance to create positive messaging, build brand awareness, and craft experiences that leave a lasting impression on consumers' minds. As we cheer on our favorite athletes this summer, let's also celebrate the brands that are innovating in the world of sports sponsorship.
