🦅🤖 New research on bird tail aerodynamics reshapes our knowledge of flight! Using 20,000 soap bubbles and particle tracking velocimetry, scientists studied gliding raptors to reveal the secret benifit of tales. Can drones copy it? 🚀 Key finding: Bird tails aren't just for stability—they're lift powerhouses! Study shows tails produce more lift than wings relative to their size, optimizing for profile drag reduction. This challenges classic flight theories 🔬 This research opens exciting avenues for bio-inspired robotics and drone design. By challenging conventional wisdom, it prompts us to reconsider fundamental aspects of winged flight and question how tails might be implemented in autonomous systems.

Let's take a look at the selected teams one by one, starting with FullThrottle-SDCN: The FullThrottle-SDCN team consists of master's and doctoral students and summer project undergraduates from the SDCNLab in the Department of Earth and Space Science and Engineering at York University, Canada. SDCNLab, established in July 2006 by Professor Jinjun Shan, leads the way in cutting-edge research in space engineering, multi-agent systems, autonomous driving, drone formations, and transportation. The team's main research focus is on #intelligent decision-making for #autonomousvehicles and drone swarms. Specifically, they aim to predict the future behaviors of dynamic targets in partially observable unknown environments for motion planning of the ego vehicle. The team has successfully developed multimodal driving behavior modeling using #deepreinforcementlearning and #gametheory, adaptive driving strategies based on MPC, ROS2-based UAV simulator, and motion prediction of surrounding dynamic vehicles using the world model. Can a Drone Shrink Mid-Flight to Squeeze Through Gaps? "Design and Control of a Passively Morphing Quadcopter" - This research introduces a passively morphing quadcopter design that uses sprung hinges, allowing the arms to fold downward without additional actuators. - The quadcopter can reduce its size by about 50% during flight, enabling it to pass through gaps too small for a standard quadcopter. - The design maintains compatibility with existing controllers and trajectory algorithms, with minor adjustments to control inputs. - Nonlinear dynamics of the system are analyzed, and design guidelines are provided to optimize morphing speed and control range. - Gap traversal manoeuvres are tested and validated experimentally, showcasing the quadcopter's unique capabilities.
