13 years ago I was the lead actor on a sitcom that hit the Kenyan TV screens by storm. I mean, we aired on free-to-air as well as paid-cable TV across the continent and the world. This was one of the gigs that opened doors and created a career for me, for which I had no qualifications. My passion, grit, and love for the entertainment scene were all I needed and continue to need! The show made me 'famous'. Fame came with a familiar face. A familiar face, I came to learn, was a key attribute in board rooms. At the time, I had just started a day job. I used to mention to many, "Entertainment is my main hustle. My day job is my side hustle!" Later that year, I quit my side hustle to focus on my dream. For nine good months, I was coin-less. I had to pivot. I had to find a way. I learned how to harness the power of entertainment in communication solutions. No 'papers'. No 'experience'. Just pure, pulsating passion! “It’s so f*cking hard out there. There is so little work. It’s a brutal time in the business. There are no jobs,” I hear consistently from agents, managers and actors. On top of fewer shows and virtually no pilots, the available acting gigs pay less than they used to amid rising cost of living, talent sources say, making it hard for many working actors to afford their rent or mortgage and support their families. As Deadline reported in September, accelerated contraction and reeled-in budgets made for a bumpy re-entry into the TV marketplace post-strike. Things only got worse by November when tens of thousands of SAG-AFTRA members started looking for jobs after the actors union reached an agreement with the studios. I’ve been saying for years that public and private entities need to set up their own micro newsrooms and populate them with journalists. Like Liam Neeson said… we have a particular set of skills. Critical thinking at breakneck speed; shooting and editing professional video with immediacy; narrative building; storytelling acumen; accuracy— it’s all there. Nimbleness, adaptability and competitiveness are the tools of our trade. And if the industry no longer respects or embraces the people who built it, we can and should take our ball and find another playground. Not sure if tv news has figured this out, but in the digital world, EVERYBODY and EVERY BUSINESS can be a news station and can laser-target their audience. The inevitable demise of tv news was self-inflicted long ago. In the end, it will likely need to evolve into something like the BBC just to survive. Or, the news industry will be some synod of oligarchs’ collective vanity project that loses money but pushes their propaganda. Oligarchs, by the way, always weaponized the news for their messaging; but at least back then, they actually tried to make money — and invested in the talent that could help them. Either way, the end is way past nigh. Disrupt or die on the vine.

People always ask me "how do you get from being a TV News Anchor to running a company that specializes in games?" Let me tell you, it's been quite the adventure! Truth be told, I never imagined myself in this role but looking back, it's amazing how the skills I honed as a TV News journalist have seamlessly translated into running this business, alongside my husband, Marc!
