I once asked the Curator of the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., “Do you think NASA will exist in 20 years?” I assumed her response would be swift and affirmative. Instead, she hesitated. Then, in a soft, confident voice, she answered: “I’m not so sure, but I certainly hope so.” Most NASA insiders assume NASA will exist for forever. I’m not sure we should assume anything. NASA didn’t exist in 1950. Who’s to say it will exist in 2050? Wayne Hale, retired Flight Director and Program Manager for the Space Shuttle, said this: “To make NASA into the extraordinarily effective organization it once was and could be again will require significant work to transform it. [...] Success in NASA’s endeavors is hobbled by three structural and cultural problems: (1) inter-center rivalry, (2) mind-numbing bureaucracy, and (3) a paralyzing cultural requirement for perfection in all things.” (*) Hale said that over seven years ago. NASA is at a crossroads. What we do next will determine whether we continue to exist or become irrelevant in the space exploration arena. Time is of the essence. Space is a very unforgiving environment! There are a lot of things that can adversely affect hardware in space. If new space startups aren’t learning from past mistakes that are public record or skipping steps in the process, then things probably will not go so well for them. Mandala’s brain trust has cumulatively over 350 years of building and flying things in space and to other worlds. If you honestly want to know if your tech will work/survive, you can’t have a better team to deeply assess and advise you on how to achieve what you are trying to do.
We're seeing many of you commercial space entrepreneurs replicating the mistakes made at NASA and NASA centers years ago. Here's a piece of advice: Go back and study the trials, errors and lessons learned at the space agency. This applies whether you’re doing environmental testing on-ground, planning, or execution in space. A lot of failures can be prevented by studying the failures of the past. It may take more time and it may take more money upfront, but there's no reason for the commercial world to ignore these lessons learned. 📸 : (NASA/Joel Kowsky)
Ever find yourself solving the wrong problem? Even rocket scientists at NASA faced this problem 🚀🖊️ Back in the 1960s, during the space race, NASA faced a dilemma: pens wouldn’t work in zero gravity. So, they spent years and millions developing a pen that could write in space. Meanwhile, the Soviets found a simpler, more effective and a lot cheaper solution: they gave their astronauts pencils ✏️ Now, I’m not sure it actually happened, but I found it a nice story to remind us that sometimes we get so caught up in the complexities of a solution that we miss the point. It’s all about focusing on the core need of our user. So if you are in the 0-1 space, make sure you’re addressing the right problems and remove all the unnecessary things you built around. NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration's latest “Small Spacecraft Activities Around the Agency” highlights just how busy we’ve been at Blue Canyon lately! • We’re now providing mission operations in support of the four BCT-provided 6U CubeSats in the Starling mission for NASA Ames Research Center. • We completed the Critical Design Review for our Saturn-class bus for NASA Goddard Space Flight Center's Pandora mission. • Plans are progressing for three Venus-class buses for NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory's and Colorado State University's INCUS mission. • Our XACT-50 will provide highly accurate, stellar-based attitude solutions and precision spacecraft control for JPL’s constellation of six SunRISE CubeSats. • A May 2024 launch has been secured for two of Blue Canyon’s 6U CubeSats for the JPL PREFIRE mission.
