Today, 12 October 2023, is World Sight Day. Since the year 2000, The International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) has coordinated World Sight Day, choosing a different theme as an area of focus for advocacy and awareness. Global Skills is proud to support IAPD in promoting this year’s theme, ‘Love Your Eyes at Work’ which highlights the importance of eye care in the workplace. No matter where you are or what job you do, it is important to prioritise and protect your eye health at work. This includes everything from avoiding accidents in the workplace, which are too often caused by or lead to poor vision, to productivity, which is greatly improved when the eye health of workers is a made priority. To initiate and support ‘Love Your Eyes at Work’, IAPB has created resources to ensure that employers and employees can look after their eye health in the workplace. Over 2.2 billion people globally can't see a child's smile, read a book, or pursue their dreams due to preventable sight loss. As I return to my desk in 2024, I'm recommitting myself to changing our world for the better. International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB)'s #2030InSight goal is a world where EVERYONE can achieve their full potential, free from avoidable blindness. This is not just about numbers. Imagine empowering a student to excel in school, a farmer to secure their livelihood, a business to improve their and their workers productivity. These are just a few of the countless lives we can impact by ensuring accessible, available and affordable eye health for all. In 2024, IAPB will be ELEVATING vision as a critical global issue, INTEGRATING eye care into healthcare systems, and ACTIVATING communities to demand change. One of my first priorities? World Sight Day 2023, taking place on 12 October, will focus on the importance of prioritising eye care in the workplace. Led by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), the theme for the awareness day will be #LoveYourEyes at Work, and will seek to highlight the role everyone can play in making eye care a priority in workplaces. Peter Holland, CEO of IAPB, said: “We know that the world is a safer, more productive place when eye health is prioritised.” “The research paints a clear picture of the impact eye care has on the workforce,” Holland continued. “For example, correcting vision with glasses increases productivity by more than 20%, decreases rates of early retirement, and results in safer drivers.” Opportunities to get involved in the awareness day include a global challenge for workplaces to screen the eye health of employees, and encouraging employees to discuss any #EyeCare they are entitled to with their human resources representative. This would be a good time to get your eyes checked. The doctor will examine the condition of the blood vessels in your retina and check the overall functioning of your eyes and vision. Reflecting on our purpose for working... Hello, in the world of healthcare, we strive to meet each day’s challenges of serving our patients and our communities, all the while managing the stress of meeting goals, I believe it’s important to pause and reflect on a fundamental question: Are we working to work, or are we working to serve? Our daily tasks and responsibilities can sometimes make it easy to get caught up in the routine of working for the sake of work itself. However, I want to remind us that our efforts should be rooted in a deeper purpose—serving our patients, clients, their families, our community, and each other. Working to Work - When we focus solely on the act of working, we risk losing sight of the bigger picture. Our roles can become mechanical, mundane and our motivation may wane as we become more task-oriented rather than purpose-driven. This approach can lead to burnout, complacency, and a sense of disconnection from the very reasons we chose our profession. Working to Serve - On the other hand, working in order to serve means approaching our tasks with a mindset of contribution and impact. It involves seeing our work as a means to positively influence the lives of those we serve—whether they are patients, clients, colleagues, or the broader community. When we adopt this perspective, our work gains greater significance, a richness and a fullness and our motivation is sustained by the knowledge that what we do matters. In a Call to Reflect and Act, I encourage each of us to take a moment to reflect on the following questions: - How does my work serve others? - In what ways can I enhance my works value and the impact of my contributions? - Am I aligning my daily tasks with the broader mission of our greater services, to “Care for those who cannot Care for themselves?” Let’s approach our daily lives in such a way that we strive to embed a service-oriented approach in our work. By doing so, we can create a more fulfilling and meaningful work environment, foster stronger connections with those we serve, and ultimately achieve greater success as a team, allowing us to serve more people who need the care that we deliver.
