PET on road to circularity, but disparities create potholesThe average recycled content rate of PET beverage bottles in the EU reached 24 per cent in 2022, but more work is needed to achieve 2025 EU targets, Petcore Europe has found. In what the organisation described as a year of ‘extreme uncertainty’ for the PET and rPET value chains, figures published for 2022 show advancement in the market. "From December 2023, So Good (1-litre), UP&GO, and Toatl (500ml) will be packaged in clear PET bottles." If you notice a difference to Sanitarium packaging this month you're not imagining things. From today the food company will be moving to clear PET packaging for its bottled products. Previously 94% of bottled packaging from Sanitarium was already recyclable but the company is hoping to bring that number even closer to its 100% target by switching to clear PET plastics. It has been great to see more and more companies making the switch to clear plastics for food packaging over the last few months. Though it may not look like much of a noticeable change from a consumer's perspective, using clear (or even lighter) plastics for food packaging increases its recyclability greatly. This is because clear packaging can be turned into clear plastic, white plastic or just about any other colour. As well as improving recyclability, the new clear bottle packaging can also be collected and dropped off at all the new container deposit scheme drop-off points. The EU needs to address the disparities in #packaging and packaging waste legislation. Packaging, whether it’s glass bottles, aluminium cans, or kegs, is indispensable for storing, transporting and enjoying beer. That’s why brewers have innovated and invested over many years to make our packaging ever more circular and sustainable, ensuring our sector has a positive impact on the planet. We take our responsibility seriously to minimise the environmental impact of beer packaging throughout the lifecycle by reducing, reusing and recycling. With more than half of the beer in the EU sold in reusable packaging, brewers have pioneered the setting up of reusable packaging collection systems for kegs and glass. In other countries, brewers have supported the establishment of world-leading recycling collections systems for cans and other glass bottles. This transition requires both investment and time. That is why we call for a policy framework that fosters a fair approach by recognising brewers’ leadership, supporting best practices already in place and ensuring that all competing sectors step up in cutting waste.
