Engaging in knowledge and empathy at YUVA's monthly study circle on December 21, 2023, led by the insightful Ms. Kavita Krishnamurthy, YUVA Governing Board Member. 🌐✨ Focused on 'Awareness on Disability,' we delved into the intricacies of both physical and mental disabilities. The session empowered us with insights on creating inclusive spaces for persons with disabilities in our work. We explored how existing structures often unintentionally exclude them and discussed ways to be more mindful and conscious moving forward. At YUVA, every month unfolds as a journey of learning and growth, fostering a deeper understanding of diverse topics. Awareness is key. Not all disabilities are visible. Some we see, some we don't. As neurodiveristy celebration week draws to a close I thought I would share some information i have found interesting about developing more inclusive work spaces. Approximately 15-20% of the global population is neurodiverse - whether that is Autism, ADHD or dyslexia, amongst other things that fall under the umbrella. This diversity is also more prevalent amongst Rainbow communities. There will be neurodivergent employees that work with and for you - each will have their own strengths, weaknesses and challenges. Most people don't want the stigma attached and won't tell their employer. So how do you support neurodiversity if you don't know it's there? -Create opportunities to be inclusive of all - Make time for your people and listen to their concerns - Understand each individual on your team and what their needs are -Accept that conditions of a work place won't be right for all - how do we support those who for instance cannot work in open plan offices? - Be clear and concise in setting expectations (helping minimize anxiety) - Provide support when a challenge presents - Be a role model for inclusivity - Be open and transparent and available for feedback You may be reading this thinking, won't this benefit all your people? Yes it will !

Empathy is about connecting with others based on our relationships with them. It involves showing concern, support, and being present and attentive. Beyond emotional support, empathy means truly understanding another person's emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. To practice empathy, pause to reflect on the other person's perspective, accepting their feelings without sharing unnecessary personal experiences. Remember it's not possible to be empathetic all the time. When you choose to be, genuinely listen and be there for others in a way that respects their individuality and experiences.
