On the 25th of January 1924 the World Organisation for Animal Health (formerly Office International des Epizooties - OIE) was founded in Paris. Three years prior in 1921, delegates from 43 countries had called for the establishment of an international organisation to coordinate and control infectious animal diseases and prevent their spread. The main reason for its foundation was the infamous rinderpest (or cattle plague), an acute and highly contagious viral disease of cattle. In 2011, rinderpest became the second disease to be declared officially eradicated, following eradication of the human disease smallpox in 1980. #animalhealth #veterinary #infectiousdiseases
