Today's piece in the New York Times discusses challenges concerning the rollout of the updated FAFSA, a critical issue KIPP has been dealing with alongside educators throughout the country who are fighting for college access for first-generation students. First-generation college students face myriad barriers in accessing higher education; technical and administrative glitches compromising the submission of FAFSA forms should not be one of them.    The NYT article also highlights the nation-leading work of our KIPP Forward college and career counselors to help our students navigate these challenges. For example, Karen Chavez, the assistant principal of college and career at KIPP Colorado who was quoted in the piece, got up at 6 A.M. every day to try to get through to the helpline in case it was easier to do so when it first opened at 8 A.M. We’re fortunate at KIPP to have a counseling staff able to provide more individualized support to students; the average counselor in the United States juggles over 400 students. Many students don’t have adults on their side to wade through a very messy, complicated process. Thank you to our incredible KIPP counselors willing to go the extra mile for our students.

Unfortunately, Kipp and other corporate-owned charter schools have smaller student bodies because the intentionally block from admission, a whole lot of students they consider 'undesirable' for one reason or another. Corporate charters also kick out students which they accept and then keep the money that the public school system gave them when they admitted the student.

This is fantastic. I am first generation, Hispanic American to graduate and I wished to have known more about the FASFA and college programs available.
