Meet Emily Foster, complex care clinical nurse specialist in the compass (complex paediatric service) team. 👋 Q: What is your role? A: The compass team works with children and young people with complex medical needs who are in hospital for long periods of time. When we asked families what would improve their care, they asked for better continuity, care coordination, and communication. This is what I aim to provide by supporting and advocating for them during these long stays, and addressing psychological, social and medical concerns. Q: Tell us about a typical day A: My role is incredibly varied and depends on the needs of each individual patient and their family. It can range from helping set up a bank account to helping manage an acutely deteriorating child needing intensive care. It often involves spending time with families, ward rounds, attending multidisciplinary meetings and teaching peers or parents. Q: What’s the best thing about your job? I'm the go-to for extremely agitated/ imminently violent patients (and occasionally practitioners)- I'm pretty good with both rapid pharmaceutical intervention 💉 and effective verbal redirection. 🗣 Reading this though, I immediately thought of my colleague, Margaret Callaghan, and how we all go to her to start IVs on the most difficult sticks. HOW TO MANAGE TIME IN DISPENSING HEALTH CARE AS A NURSE. 1. First, be disciplined enough to complete little domestic tasks outside work space 2. Be punctual to work 3. Draft a nursing care plan and review it or follow through with it 4. Take out or ignore distractions while dispensing health care 5. Approach work based on priority 6. Stay focused at work, be psychologically and mentally present 7. Multitasking on its own is a good skill but could be time wasting and may be counter productive so avoid it while time management in rendering care is concerned. 8. plan your day each day and be mindful to keep to it 9. Take advantage of your time off to plan for another work day 10. As I embark on a new chapter in my career, I've been reflecting on my journey in nursing – a path filled with profound experiences and some unsettling realizations. One of the most challenging aspects I encountered was the noticeable silence in situations that desperately needed voices. There were times when standing up for what was right in nursing felt like a solitary battle. Advocating for better conditions, patient care, and ethical practices often meant standing alone, with support coming in hushed tones rather than public solidarity. This lack of collective advocacy within my nursing roles was disheartening. It wasn't until I stepped away that I found a community actively championing for change in nursing. This contrast was eye-opening and, frankly, a bit terrifying, especially when thinking about our families and ourselves as potential patients in the healthcare system. The question that haunts me is: If not us, then who? Who will advocate for the necessary changes in nursing? It’s a profession that deserves voices brave enough to stand together, not just behind one another. To my fellow professionals in nursing and beyond, I pose this: How can we cultivate an environment where standing up for what’s right is the norm, not the exception? How do we encourage and support those who have the courage to speak out? As I move forward, these experiences shape my perspective and drive.
