May all the job seekers find their golden ticket, and may the leaders searching for talent find their star! While we continue to see mass layoffs affecting businesses and employees, the current state of the workplace is unsettling for many. These layoffs have also significantly affected small businesses that provide these large companies with contractors. Yet, other companies are actively searching for talent and need help finding the right candidate, and job seekers have not been placed for a long time, as we often read on LinkedIn. I share this because watching this video inspired me to think about how an interview can be life-changing. Sydnie Christmas's audition changed her life—and also the lives of whatever agent, record label, musicians, backup singers, and producers get to work with her. She has been working the Front of House at a gym but didn’t give up on her dream job. For her audition, she performed a well-known song that Simon disliked. Her mission was to do it so well that it would change his mind, and it did. Now, because of an audition, her life is forever changed, whether she wins this contest or not. To job seekers, where can you apply to pursue your dream job? Are you so prepared that in that interview, you will change the minds of those judging you with their preset ideologies and blow them away? What can you do differently with the same old song that will make you stand out? To leaders, open your minds and do not be against what you think you need. If they are a certain age, they are not a fit. If they are a mom, they are not a fit. If they look like Big Bird, they are not a fit. If they sing this song, I'm not even listening. Listen to the audition; it may be a game-changer for your business! When faced with restructures, many organizations struggle to construct a humane layoff process. There’s a better way to do this → We’ve asked our Cultivate community (including 16,000 job-seekers!) how to make layoffs as supportive & kind as possible. Their top three insights? 1️⃣ Ease the transition financially. 💻 Can you let people keep their laptop to use for their job search? Can you roll out transitions at the start of the month, creating a longer stretch of ongoing health care before COBRA? 2️⃣ Consider a voluntary “buy-out” option or equivalent. 🚪 This allows people to leave who are already one-foot-out-the-door –– and enables more of those to stay who are truly keen on sticking around. This can help with retention and avoid more attrition after-the-fact. 3️⃣ Create meaningful connections for people once laid off. 🤝 Can leaders make direct references and open their own networks? Can the org itself put out an announcement to external stakeholders encouraging new employers to scoop up the talent? Can you invest in pushing people toward a network to help them land on their feet? We hope none of you are in a position where you’ll need to restructure this year due to budget constraints –– but we also know that times are still hard for many orgs across the social impact sector. Josh, what a vivid and exciting analogy! Drawing the parallel between Jamal Murray's dramatic buzzer-beater shot and the thrill of landing an amazing candidate for a tough recruiting role is brilliant. I can totally picture it - you get handed one of those roles that everyone has struggled to fill, the clock is winding down, but you stay cool under pressure. You meticulously gameplan your recruiting strategy, going into the talent marketplace to identify, attract, and assess top candidates. It's like you're dribbling down the court, sizing up the defense. And then comes the climactic moment - you skillfully navigate the candidates through interviews, build consensus among the hiring team, and make the offer right as the clock expires. When that perfect candidate enthusiastically accepts, it must feel like draining that buzzer-beating three-pointer! The hiring team goes wild, celebrating the big win of landing a top talent. The adrenaline, the elation, the drama - it's such a perfect metaphor for that hard-fought recruiting victory. Just like the Nuggets players mobbed Jamal in jubilation, I can imagine your team rejoicing at the news of adding an A-player to the ranks. What a rush that "buzzer-beater" moment must be after all the behind-the-scenes work and perseverance it takes. Finding talented people is challenging enough, but filling those tough roles requires true skill and grit as a recruiter. Kudos to you for embracing those moments and delivering excitement for your teams!

This is my (layoff) story👇 In light of all the recent layoffs, I want to share the story of how I bounced back after being laid off almost decade ago. 😒 CHAPTER 1: THE LAYOFF Many years ago, I was working as a CD at small ad tech start up in New York City. The job was great. I was learning a ton. Building my reel. Life was good. I soon realized that even the best companies can hit hard times. As a result, a number of talented people were laid off - myself included. It was depressing, to say the least. 🤦🏼♂️ 🔍 CHAPTER 2: THE QUEST FOR OPPORTUNITY The job hunt was grueling. A total rat race. Despite a solid portfolio, interviews were scarce, and callbacks even rarer. Determined to stand out, I redesigned my website, updated my resume, tweaked my LinkedIn page - over and over again. Still, nothing. Crickets... Whatever I was doing (or not doing), simply wasn’t working. ❌ ⤵️ CHAPTER 3: THE PIVOT I needed to do something. Something unexpected. Take a different approach. I asked myself: “What can I do to set myself apart?” 🤔 My answer: Create something that highlights my skills with personal touch. Send it out. Make a wish. Hope for the best. 🙏🏻 💡I’m in the storytelling business and figured the best way to showcase my storytelling ability was to tell my own with a short film. 🎬 I had a lifetime of content to pull from. I collected all my work, sifted through family photo albums, dusted and digitized old VHS tapes, recorded VO on my iPhone inside my state-of-the-art recording studio (aka my closet), and jumped into the edit. No guardrails. No deadlines. It just had to be good. The only KPI was getting hired. After 20 gallons of coffee, 6 weeks of work and a case of delicious ice cold refreshing zero sugar #Pepsi 😉, my story was ready for launch. 🚀 🏈 CHAPTER 4: THE HAIL MARY Armed with my creation, I cast a wide net, sending it to potential employers far and wide. To my amazement, it actually worked. I was landing interviews, getting callbacks and eventually offers. I took a job and was back in the game. ✅ 💪🏼 In the face of adversity, I learned the power of innovation and perseverance. My message to you: When traditional methods falter, think differently. Tackle the problem from a new angle. Make something. Take a swing. Stay positive, stay focused, and dare to redefine the status quo. Good luck out there!
