Our EAGs provide a safe, open, and inclusive forum where under-represented employees can build community, and create opportunities for mentoring and professional development. We asked our LGBTQIAP+ EAG Champions Quinn Sparks, Bex Ronan and Heather Ronan to share information about this group. Why are you proud to champion the LGBTQIAP+ EAG? "A big part of being proud of who I am and embracing my truth is being visible. Being a champion allows me to be a visible representative of what it means to be an out and proud queer professional. Seeing out and proud people living their lives was an enormous inspiration in my journey. I want to be that representation for other people. "At the inception of our group, one of my fellow champions, Heather Ronan, talked about our LGBTQIAP+ affinity group being like a lighthouse for people at Davey. A beacon of hope where everyone can come to be their authentic selves. As leaders, our group mission is centered on fostering resilience, expression, support, and empowerment. During our bi-monthly virtual group meetings, I continue to share in the experience of genuine connection and vulnerability with others. 🌈 Happy Pride Month! 🌈   June is a time of celebration, reflection, and advocacy for the LGBTQIA+ community. Pride Month is not just about the vibrant parades and joyful gatherings, but also about honoring the resilience, struggles, and triumphs of those who have fought and continue to fight for equality and acceptance.   At its core, Pride Month reminds us of the importance of inclusivity, respect, and dignity for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. This is a time to amplify LGBTQIA+ voices, support LGBTQIA+ rights, and commit to creating spaces where everyone can live authentically and free from discrimination.   As we celebrate Pride Month, it's crucial to acknowledge the unique health challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals. As we celebrate Pride Month, it's essential to recognize the progress made toward equality while acknowledging the ongoing challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community, especially in the healthcare sector. Health equity remains a core principle, ensuring that everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, has access to the care they require. As I renew my commitment to the healthcare finance industry, I am dedicated to advancing initiatives that promote fair and equal healthcare for all individuals. Healthcare organizations play a crucial role in promoting health equity. We can make significant progress by implementing inclusive policies, expanding access to quality care, and creating safe and affirming environments. This includes establishing comprehensive non-discrimination policies, providing inclusive health benefits, and ensuring culturally competent care through ongoing training. Additionally, partnerships with LGBTQ+ organizations and community engagement are essential in connecting individuals with the necessary resources and support. Together, we can create a more inclusive healthcare system that celebrates diversity and supports the well-being of all communities. By prioritizing health equity, we honor the spirit of Pride Month and move towards a healthier, more equitable future for everyone.

Supporting health equity for the LGBTQIA+ community starts with awareness and partnership. Public health workers are instrumental in addressing healthcare disparities faced by the LGBTQIA+ community. Through education, advocacy, and support within communities, families, schools, and healthcare providers, we can make a significant impact. The 2024 Human Rights Campaign’s Healthcare Equality Index (HEI) shows promise—a record number of participants, more than 1,065 U.S. healthcare facilities, took this survey that measures LGBTQ+ inclusive policies and practices. The report found that overall, healthcare facilities nationwide are making significant strides in LGBTQ+ patient-centered care, implementing best practices, and staff training. Happy Transgender Awareness Week! 🌈 How do I participate as an ally? I educate myself, lift voices and help bring visibility! It has been a busy work week, but during my train rides to work, I have been reading stories from the Human Rights Campaign's website - Celebrating Changemakers: Stories from the Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Community 2023-2024 and lo and behold, I learned about a changemaker doing great things back in my old hometown! - (Shout out to Brayland Brown, MBA - you gained a new follower and I hope all my connections who support and empower entrepreneurs and the startup community reaches out to you!) As Transgender Awareness Week comes to a close, let's remember that the impact of being an ally extends far beyond the moments we consciously set aside. It's about weaving inclusivity into the fabric of our daily lives. So whether it's reading articles during your commute, amplifying voices online, or simply engaging in open conversations, every small action counts. Let's continue to learn, uplift, and show support in the little moments – because creating a more inclusive world doesn't always require a grand gesture. My thoughts for the Month of May Happy New Month. Breaking Barriers: Empowering LGBTQ+ Youth Through Social Work Advocacy As social workers, we have a profound opportunity and responsibility to advocate for the rights and well-being of all individuals, including LGBTQ+ youth who often face unique challenges and barriers to equality and acceptance. According to recent studies, LGBTQ+ youth are disproportionately affected by issues such as homelessness, bullying, mental health struggles, and discrimination in various aspects of their lives. These challenges can have devastating effects on their physical, emotional, and social well-being, leading to higher rates of depression, substance abuse, and suicide attempts compared to their heterosexual peers. As advocates for social justice and equality, it is crucial for us to actively work towards creating inclusive and affirming environments where LGBTQ+ youth feel safe, valued, and supported. This includes advocating for policies and programs that promote LGBTQ+ rights and protections, providing culturally competent services and support networks, and challenging systemic inequalities and discrimination. Through targeted interventions such as individual counseling, group therapy, support groups, and community outreach initiatives, social workers can play a pivotal role in empowering LGBTQ+ youth to navigate their identities, build resilience, and access resources and support networks that affirm their dignity and rights. Moreover, by fostering collaboration and partnership with community organizations, educational institutions, and policymakers, we can work towards creating systemic changes that address the root causes of LGBTQ+ youth marginalization and promote greater acceptance, inclusion, and equality for all. Together, let us stand in solidarity with LGBTQ+ youth, amplify their voices, and work towards a future where every young person can thrive and fulfill their potential, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression. SPECIAL REPORT: Celebrating IDAHOBIT We possess a profound ability to shape our children's attitudes and beliefs, embedding values of acceptance, inclusivity, and respect for all. The International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), celebrated each year on May 17th, emphasises the critical need to educate children about diversity and inclusivity. Inaugurated in 2004 by the World Health Organization, this day is a global call to promote tolerance and combat discrimination against the LGBTQIA+ community. Instilling respect and acceptance for people of all sexual orientations and gender identities in children is crucial. Celebrating IDAHOBIT helps families communicate a strong stance against discrimination, highlighting the importance of diversity and the damaging effects of stereotypes and biases. These prejudices often arise from the media, societal interactions, and peer influences, necessitating proactive efforts from parents and caregivers to counteract and discuss these issues. Creating inclusive environments supports diversity and plays a vital role in raising awareness and demonstrating solidarity with LGBTQIA+ students and community members. It is a commitment to creating a world free from prejudice and discrimination, instilling values of empathy, respect and inclusivity. In honor of Pride Month, we’re recognizing UH employees who help make our workplace more inclusive and welcoming through their work every day. At University Hospitals, we support belonging and inclusivity for all who identify as members of the LGBTQ+ community. One way we endeavor to support the LGBTQ+ community is through our PRIDE ERG. Deairius H., Manager, Gender Care, UHHS Clinical Excellence and Diversity, explains that our PRIDE ERG makes an impact within the UH system by creating a safe space where all intersections of the LGBTQ+ community are not only accepted but affirmed and celebrated. “The goal of the ERG is to provide networking and mentorship opportunities, professional development, educational opportunities, and collective advocacy on behalf of our caregivers and patients,” Deairius shares. “It creates an authentic space of belonging here at UH for members of the community who may feel disconnected.” Along with supporting our team, University Hospitals is passionate about serving the population in our area.
