In honor of World Bicycle Day this week, we are celebrating another successful Bike Everywhere Day at Kilroy’s Fremont Lake Union property in Seattle. 🚴♂️ In partnership with Cascade Bicycle Club our Kilroy teams marked the 8th year of hosting the Celebration Station, supporting cyclists who commute to the office or use bikes as an alternative method of transportation. With Fremont Lake Union Center located on the Burke-Gilman trail—a popular spot for cyclists, walkers, and runners—our team took the opportunity to greet morning commuters and pass out pastries, breakfast bars, and patch kits to about 700 smiling cyclists. Building community one bike-ride at a time! 📍- Fremont Lake Union Center, Seattle, WA 🌱 - LEED Gold Certified, Energy Star Certified, WELL Health-Safety, TOBY Award 📸/🎥 - Cascade Bicycle Club 🏙️ - Leasing Info: https://lnkd.in/dvYYcKhp #realestate #kilroy #onekilroy #thisiskilroy #kilroyrealty #seattle #pnw #bike #bicyleday #worldbikeday

I am an avid cyclist and try to get in a ride every day, weather permitting. Poor road surfaces from wear and tear and gas line installations (followed by poor paving restoration), no dedicated bike lanes and cars that often get a little too close by choice or necessity lead to less-than-ideal bicycling conditions. Kingston, NY, has done a really good job of roadway design with its Broadway bike lane, which is separated from traffic by parking spaces for cars. When we lived in Florida, bike lanes were poorly designed and the Naples area was, sadly, one of the worst locations in the country for bicycle fatalities. Europe and Asia do a much better job of providing space for bicycles, an economical, more environmentally-friendly and healthier way of commuting, as well as recreation. This article focuses on Winnipeg, which has a strong bicycling community pushing for change that favors bikes while respecting the needs of drivers. Let's hope this can be replicated in more municipalities. Bicycling can be a lifelong and life-extending sport, as long as road designers and users "share the road." #bicycling #planning #UrbanPlanning #commuting #recreation #downtowns

Despite heavy opposition, Seattle completed a bike trail gap with an on-street bikeway. It doubled bike traffic at the expense of one second of motor vehicle travel time. As with all Seattle bike infrastructure, it has some wonky design that result from compromises in favor of motor vehicle traffic and being cheap, so I wonder what would happen if we started designing infrastructure first for pedestrians and cyclists, then transit… with all the compromises coming at the expense of the remaining modes. https://lnkd.in/gDS-VtCv

As city planners, we must promote and advocate for safe and effective transportation options. This article highlights what three cities are doing to facilitate moving around by bike. Following are a few starters for your city: - If your city hasn’t adopted a complete streets ordinance, promote one. - Push for a Vision Zero policy to eliminate traffic deaths (not restricted to cycling). Here’s to good reading and better biking, Brett

This story demonstrates the challenges government agencies face in decision-making. In this case influential people, businesses, and special interests opposed changing road design despite both traffic data and safety outcomes demonstrating both feasibility and improved conditions by repurposing an excess lane of vehicle travel for a protected cycle track.
