Armed Forces Veterans' Day is a special occasion celebrated on January 14th to honor the service rendered by the First Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Field Marshal KM Cariappa. As we recognize their service, we are reminded of the military virtues of honor, courage, and self-sacrifice that inspire soldiers and civilians alike. Many military personnel undergo a transition from their military careers to civilian employment each year, including those who serve in the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard. It was an honor to meet some of these inspiring veterans during Aero India 2023. Their passion and dedication were truly remarkable. What skills do military veterans gain that make them successful builders? U.S. Army Veteran and Assistant Superintendent Mason Hitt breaks it down into three categories: * Work Ethic: “Respect is often given as a general courtesy, but real trust is built by your actions as a leader. Whether subcontractors, team members, or soldiers in your platoon, when they see you continuously put forth 100% of your effort to get the job done correctly and safely, they trust you. That starts with working hard.” * Teamwork: “In the Army and in construction, you need to understand how your role fits into the team and be ready to step up and fill in if needed. The strong relationships you form with those teammates grants you access to a pool of knowledge and experience you’ll need to leverage to be better than you were yesterday.” * Problem-solving: “When it comes to solving issues, the military taught me to ask questions like, ‘What’s the true root cause of the issue? What is my end goal? And what resources do I have at my disposal?’ These questions help me start to formulate a plan. Reposting for expanded reach. There is a conspicuous gap in transition support for retiring military officers. Various service policies present barriers to accessing career transition fellowships that provide valuable civilian experience. Current service career transition programs are insufficient, and the number of veteran-focused non-profit organizations highlights both the gap and need.

As part of #ArmedForces week, today marks specific recognition of those in our Reserve Armed Forces. You might even spot some wearing their military uniform to their civilian work today, where safe and practicable. Reservists are commonly cited as "twice the citizen" as they choose to support the Armed Forces in their spare time, typically during the evenings and weekends, but occasionally full-time when the country needs additional support. I was an Army Reservist for 13 years. I had a huge amount of opportunities presented to me which helped my professional development, which, in turn, my employers were able to benefit from. Whether that was transferring ideas/best practice/working models to/from the military and civilian worlds, or in the training & experience I gained in leadership and operational roles. Do you know any Reservists? How does your company support and enable them?

"What do you miss most about the Navy?" The people. Here are some of those people. A Submariner. A Surface Warfare Officer (and Amphib WTI). A Naval Aviator (#SFL). And a UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY civilian and engineer. All are warrior leaders. All are military spouses. All are awesome human beings. They manage the chaos with grace, humility, and humor (JOPA for life). I miss them and countless others like them, showing up every day and putting in the hard work to make the team better. So what did we talk about? #Veterantransition, of course. We talked about the importance of networking. If we want to prepare veterans for transition, we should reframe when we start to think about reintegration. Invest in veteran transition at accession by upskilling with professional certificates, soft skill development, and intentional networking opportunities. This is investing in our people; it can improve organizational performance (#missionreadiness) and improve retention.

Each June 14th, we celebrate the establishment of the U.S. Army in 1775, recognizing over two centuries of service and sacrifice. The U.S. Army has not only defended our freedoms but also laid the groundwork for many innovations, including in the field of project management. Our brave soldiers and veterans excel in the art of getting the right work done efficiently and effectively. Their experience and discipline become invaluable when combined with proper training and opportunities in civilian roles. The Army's Holistic Health and Fitness (H2F) System begins in the Future Soldier Program (U.S. Army Recruiting Command (USAREC)) , is taught in Initial Entry Training (U.S. Army Center for Initial Military Training ), refined in every Professional Military Education (US Army TRADOC ), and sustained at echelon (US Army), (Army National Guard)(United States Army Reserve) This system is the key to #peoplefirst and the foundation of every variable for Soldier and Family Readiness. The H2F System and its compromised programs are the tools by which Leaders serve Soldiers. H2F isn't a test, an activity, or a check-the-block event. It is an investment in the future of our organization and the safety of our nation. Nothing in the Army is more important than the Soldier, and nothing indeed improves more aspects of a Soldier's life than comprehensively preparing them to enhance and maintain their physical, nutritional, mental, sleep, and spiritual well-being.

Head in the clouds. The term Cloud ☁️ has a number of different meanings now. Today my head was literally in the clouds as was the rest of the C-130 aircrew. It was planned and intentional. We trusted our planning, coordination, equipment, and instruments. This trust is critical as is effective communications. As you can see it is very difficult to orient yourself when in the clouds. It takes critical awareness and attention to detail. Sometimes I find myself in the “clouds” unplanned or unintentional. I think it is fair to say we all do at times. When we find ourselves in the clouds, Acknowledge it and Accept it. This will help you Process in the moment to Plan to take appropriate Action. Many of us were on the grind this weekend getting it done. Keep it up. Your efforts, dedication and sacrifices are appreciated. Take time to remind yourself of this and keep your mind strong, healthy, prepared and balanced to deal with the “clouds”.
