Providers sometimes overthink the needs of participants, and that can edge into coercive control where the provider starts making all the decisions. For example, if a participant enjoys gardening and then deciding that the garden activities are restricted to times only when a support worker is present limits participant autonomy. Instead, providers should focus on building the participant's capacity so they can still garden when the support worker isn’t there. If I'm a provider, my role isn't necessarily to garden with the participant, but rather to equip them to garden whenever they wish. This means teaching them how to use tools and adapt activities to their abilities, ensuring they're not always dependent on a support worker. The key point we need to be mindful of is the impact of balancing interdisciplinary approaches with the avoidance of coercive control. Everything should be participant-centred, empowering participants to make decisions. Providers must focus on building the participant's capacity, not controlling their lives. This gets complicated with diagnoses and disabilities. Deciding where the line of control lies is challenging. It's not solely the provider's decision. We need to recognise that like anyone, participants may have days when they don't want to engage, and that's okay. Our job is to be there and support them, allowing qualified professionals to make informed decisions about their capacity and care.

Yesterday Myles Wallace and I had the opportunity to visit with the Criss Cole Rehabilitation Center. Did you know... 📌 Many people develop vision loss later in life. 📌 People who are blind may not use a cane or guide dog and you'd never know they were blind walking past them on the street. 📌 Blind people may have some vision left but it comes and goes, so they're trained to navigate the world without relying on it. 📌 The leading causes of vision loss are macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. Like many other disabilities, vision loss exists on a spectrum. Blind people are a diverse group who experience disability differently. One my biggest wow moments was learning that one of the classes students are required to take is woodworking. (Yes, a blind person can use a circular saw.) This helps them learn to use other senses as well as follow safety protocols. In one of the pictures attached here is a shelf and box made by blind people in the center. -- Vision loss can be scary, especially if you've lived your life up to that point seeing. Criss Cole Center, run by Texas Workforce Commission, helps newly blind Texans get re-oriented to living and operating in the world with vision loss. Peak Performers partners with Criss Cole Rehabilitation Center because many blind people have skills that are perfectly suited for office work. Also, technologies such as voiceover (especially #JAWS developed by Freedom Scientific) and screen magnification allow them to operate computers.
