2023 has been a year of learning! And what a challenging year... Below, a reflection and intentions for 2024. I read in total 15 books which is probably a personal record within a year (unfortunately, I bought about 15 new books too). I also read countless articles and research studies. Topics that I got to discuss in written or speaking format have been around folklore, liminal spaces, unlearning, climate and business as usual, technofeudalism… I feel proud for creating 2 talks that have been large bodies of work and have utilized all the knowledge I have been gaining (I often don't brag enough). These talks touched upon overarching themes that are interconnected and are changing our social fabric and with it Design as a profession. One of the talks at the prestigious UX Copenhagen (Helle is the mastermind behind it) explored the emerging role of holistic design (or transition design) and how strategic design, ecology, and systems approaches can help us create solutions that benefit our communities and the world we live in. The other talk was about navigating the rapid shifts in tech, from the viewpoint of Design Operations given at Rosenfeld Media's de-facto Design Operations conference (shoutout to Louis, and Jon!). As 2024 sets in I have some intentions... They revolve around reimagining and hope and how strategic design, activism, and entrepreneurship can shape better futures. Additionally, I have been talking extensively with Ron Bronson about a workshop on Critical AI perspectives (If any of these topics interest you, do not hesitate to reach out and share your thoughts with me). Here's to a 2024 of reimagining! By offering hands-on learning opportunities, makerspaces complement traditional classroom instruction, nurturing critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and fostering creativity. Moreover, makerspaces cultivate a culture of entrepreneurial spirit and innovation. Serving as incubators for startups and small ventures, they afford aspiring entrepreneurs access to prototyping facilities, mentorship, and networking opportunities. Makerspaces democratize the path to market, enabling individuals to transform passion projects into viable businesses. Community engagement is a defining characteristic of makerspaces. In summation, makerspaces embody a philosophy—a belief in the transformative power of human creativity, collaboration, and experimentation to effect positive change. "Critical Design Thinking" encapsulates almost everything that has to be said in the matter from here to the future. Both at a professional and personal level. The former, considering what we are pursuing and working to achieve at Nova SBE Innovation Ecosystem for the next years (spoiler alert); the latter, considering that my not-that-far-away-anymore School formation went from critical theory to semiotics, in Journalism; and then, from self-taught to applied ethnography in market research and strategy. So I'm positively surrendered: kudos to you Anne-Laure Fayard and Sarah Fathallah for the great article at Stanford Social Innovation Review :)

💡 Come to talk about Transdisciplinarity and Design and take stock beyond *buzzwords* to outline an Agenda for Design Research at DRS2024 Boston of Design Research Society (DRS) Led by Julieta Matos Castaño, Mascha van der Voort (representing the Transdisciplinary Collaboration Hub of the DesignLab of the University of Twente), and guest panelists Frederick van Amstel, Dan Lockton, Femke Coops, Iohanna Nicenboim, and Joseph Lindley. Transdisciplinarity has been defined and practiced in various ways. However, there is still unclarity, tensions, and opportunities for transdisciplinarity in design research, and it is essential to go beyond buzzwords to take stock and outline an agenda for design. The conversation focuses primarily on participatory transdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity as social practice to explore: 1) How does design research engage in transdisciplinarity to integrate designerly knowledge with other epistemologies, lived experiences, values, and ways of knowing? 1b) How does transdisciplinarity challenge or contribute to extending designerly knowledge production to a plural ecosystem of interconnected actors? 1c) How may transdisciplinarity foster ethical and responsible social transformations? We plan for a hybrid conversation that combines provocation and debate with moments of active collaboration, co-shaping the agenda and zines to challenge the design status quo!
