Our Senior Architect and Technical Design Lead, Felipe Francisco AIA, CPHC is next in our team member highlight for our #SNYLTurns20 series. When did you first become interested in architecture or engineering as a career? 🎤“I grew up in the first house built in a suburban subdivision and spent the first year watching the rest of the houses get built and sneaking onto the construction sites at the end of the day to treat the framed houses as jungle gyms. I suppose I have always been interested in architecture.” Which one of your current projects excites you the most? 🎤“The National Museum for Forest Service History, the opportunity to work on a project for the U.S. Forest Service has been incredibly rewarding. Outside of architecture, I find fulfillment from experiencing the outdoors and the U.S. Forest Service’s stewardship of the environment is indispensable. It is gratifying to give back to an organization that provides such an important service to the nation.” What is the greatest potential for architecture to shape a neighborhood community? 🎤“Architecture has the greatest ability to support the development of neighborhood communities by admitting that we should not shape them. It is the people of the community who shape and define the culture and texture of the community. We should aim to listen to the needs of the community and provide design solutions that support their goals.” What do you hope to contribute from your work? 🎤“Throughout my career, I hope to contribute to projects that better the built environment and help to reduce the impact the field has on the environment.” What restaurant would you recommend your coworkers to try? 🎤“Death and Co. in Denver” If you could redesign anything, what would it be? 🎤“Chapstick containers, why put a wax product in a non-leak-proof container if it is meant to go in your pocket?”

One area that homeowners are tempted to skip when building their custom luxury homes is hiring an experienced architect. The reality is, that architects without an entire portfolio of high-end builds risk getting even the basics wrong. So, even though hiring the cheaper architect might seem like a great idea at the time, you’ll find that the value you get from a more established firm will help offset these costs in the long run. More about how spending less on an architect in Costa Rica can cost you in the long run. → https://lttr.ai/AL0k1

Excellent business model. Makes a difference.
Kansas City–based architecture firm BNIM elected in the fall to adopt an employee stock ownership plan, or ESOP, giving all of its employees a direct stake in the company. I spoke with partners Laura Lesniewski and James Pfieffer, who say that the decision has already made a difference in the design work they do and people they recruit. The move follows recent decisions by other large firms including SHoP Architects and Zaha Hadid Architects to move to an employee-owned model. So I wanted to find out just what this means and how it works.

I find the language in the article interesting. It's not 'health and safety' that caused this. It's poor design and construction choices that could lead to end of life events. How about we name the architects, builders, and council that signed this off, rather than blame health and safety? #Construction #Design #Safety #Architecture #BuildingCouncils
