Circular cities - a nice concept, but does it work? In a new study published in NPJ Urban Sustainability, led by Tanya Tsui, we answer part of the puzzle. We uncover at what spatial scale cities, and in particular the City of Amsterdam, could reuse secondary timber in new construction projects. For more on the project, Massachusetts Institute of Technology published a very nice summary. https://lnkd.in/epDVVwCC

GBC Slovenia and World Green Building Council European Regional Network (ERN)’s European Manifesto for a sustainable built environment sets out a vision for how buildings can be at the heart of a prosperous and equitable future for Europe. Endorsed by over 20 Green Building Councils (GBCs) and our regional partners in the ERN, the manifesto outlines the key policy priorities for European leaders to endorse and champion, which our network is ready to deliver. The manifesto includes key regulations, information and incentives which should be introduced to support these priorities. The policy recommendations focus on eight priority areas: Carbon Circular Economy Health Water Resilience Finance Biodiversity Just Transition. By putting into practice the guidance outlined in the manifesto, policymakers can work together with industry to deliver energy efficient, low-carbon and high-quality built environments which are fit for present and future climates, facilitate the regeneration of our spaces and resources, and which serve to celebrate and continue Europe’s rich heritage of beautiful architecture.

Happy #NationalTriviaDay! Did you know that our Ocean Pavilion expansion is being built to meet some of the world’s toughest green building standards? 👀💚 Ocean Pavilion is targeting the Living Building Challenge Petal Certification, which guides participants to dramatically raise the bar from “doing less harm” to serving as stewards of our environment. For us, this means Ocean Pavilion will operate 100% fossil fuel-free; recirculate 96% of salt water in the building and use heat from the water to warm the building; use carefully sourced materials; and much more. Bonus fun fact: Worldwide, We’re the first aquarium to pursue this standard. Want to keep learning more? In this episode of our City's Sustainabilty Practices we featured 3 Cities in Germany. Germany is renowned for its commitment to sustainable architecture and practices, setting a global example through innovative designs, advanced technologies, and stringent environmental regulations. The country's approach integrates ecological, economic, and social aspects to promote long-term sustainability in the built environment. Key Elements of Germany's Sustainable Architecture 1 Energy-Efficient Buildings: Germany has established itself as a leader in energy-efficient building standards, with the *Passivhaus* (Passive House) standard being one of the most notable. This standard focuses on reducing the building's energy consumption by using high-quality insulation, airtight construction, and energy-efficient windows. Passive Houses often use heat recovery ventilation systems to minimize energy loss. 2. Renewable Energy Integration: The integration of renewable energy sources, such as solar panels and wind turbines, is a common practice in German sustainable architecture. The *Energiewende* (energy transition) policy aims to shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting energy independence. 3.Green Roofs and Walls: Green roofs and living walls are prevalent in German cities, contributing to biodiversity, reducing the urban heat island effect, and improving air quality. These features also provide natural insulation, which can significantly reduce energy consumption for heating and cooling. 4. Sustainable Materials The use of sustainable and recycled materials is a cornerstone of German sustainable architecture. Materials like timber, rammed earth, and recycled concrete are commonly used, reducing the environmental impact of construction. Associate Professor | TU Delft Department of Urbanism | Circularity for Regenerative Cities and Regions |
Soon we are starting our online course - Spatial Circularity Strategies for Sustainable Regional Development- for professionals again. It’s a dedicated course for a small group wit lots of interaction. #circularity #transition #urbanism
Assistant Professor of Spatial Planning & Strategy at TU Delft; Coordinator of the Master track of Urbanism; Executive Team member of the International Forum on Urbanism (IFoU)
In the ‘linear system’, cities consume over 75% of natural resources, produce over 50% of global waste, and emit 60-80% of greenhouse gases. This numbers make the application of circular economy in cities and regions crucial to achieving sustainability. Creating circular regions is a complex process that requires multi-stakeholder cooperation and policy integration. Our hands-on online course will teach you how to merge all spatial aspects into the formation of circular strategies for the sustainable development of your city and region. Join our experts Alexander Wandl Lei Qu Arjan van Timmeren https://lnkd.in/ecyTEXXN on October 4 and transition your city into the future! The course was developed by colleagues from Department of Urbanism, Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, supported by the TU Delft Extension School #cityplanning #spatialplanning #circulareconomy #sustainabledevelopment

🌱 Embrace Sustainable Building Practices Today! 🏗️ 🌳 As we confront the challenges of climate change, it's clear that every decision we make in construction and architecture carries significant weight. That's why I'm passionate about advocating for the adoption of sustainable practices, particularly the use of natural materials and structures, to drastically reduce emissions and carbon footprint. 🏡 🌿 By opting for natural materials like wood, bamboo, and recycled materials, we can create structures that not only endure but also contribute to a healthier environment. These materials boast lower embodied energy compared to traditional building materials, resulting in fewer greenhouse gas emissions throughout their lifecycle. 🔊 I believe it's imperative for us as professionals to unite and embrace these sustainable building practices, not only for the sake of our planet but also for the well-being of future generations. To ignite inspiration and showcase innovative ideas, I've attached a video highlighting remarkable projects that exemplify the beauty and effectiveness of sustainable building practices and explain a natural solution. 📺 🎥 I invite you to watch the video and join me in championing this cause. Let's collaborate and explore ways to integrate sustainable solutions into our projects, making a positive impact on the environment while delivering exceptional results. 👷♀️ 🏘 ! This is an urgent call for sustainable building practices in our industries and personal real estate choices! 🏠 #SustainableBuilding #ClimateAction #GreenConstruction https://lnkd.in/gcJaSa4w
