The more things change the more they stay the same. The current iteration of cost control measures (called Profitability & Sustainability rules, which is ironic as they encourage neither profitability nor sustainability, benefit existing large clubs that qualify for major European competitions. The rules make is difficult for ambitious/aspirational owners who want their clubs to challenge the existing elite. The rules are set to be replaced by a Squad Control Cap which will…benefit existing large clubs that qualify for major European competitions. Fancy that!

What about state owned clubs pushing inflation up by overspending on wages and transfer fees Kieran Maguire? Big clubs were medium sized clubs once upon a time but were made big through hard bloody work and iconic Scotish managers( shankly and busby) to name 2. Also I would love you do do a peice on how Manchester city have been declaring more commercial income than institutions like Real Madrid,Barca united and Liverpool. This is impossible. There sponsorship is 90% in the Middle East and are well and truly overflated. This is what makes a mockery of the premier league. Also I’m all for the deal for the EFL to get 25% over all TV revenue’s from English football.

Thanks Kieran Maguire, a really interesting listen. I think this is a global challenge for the game (albeit significantly higher figures in the Premier League). Any mechanisms to support fiscal prudence need to have a layer of governance wrapped around them that are transparent but also give a balanced approach to fairness and competitiveness. (Perhaps significant financial rewards for clubs that align budget to strategy for long term sustainable success both on and off the pitch). Let's see what the squad control cap brings!

Where's the 'unlike' button, this is so predictable yet always frustrating.
