Japan Purchases 400 Tomahawk Cruise Missiles from the United States In response to increased regional threats, Japan has signed a deal with the United States to acquire up to 400 Tomahawk cruise missiles. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's government aims to double annual defense spending to approximately $68 billion by 2027, positioning Japan as the world's third-largest military spender. The decision to accelerate the deployment of Tomahawks and Japanese-made Type 12 surface-to-ship missiles reflects Japan's perception of its "severest" security environment since World War II, citing threats from China and North Korea. The purchase agreement was attended by Defense Minister Minoru Kihara and U.S. Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel. #Japan #TomahawkMissiles #Defense #RegionalSecurity

U.S. signals plan for immediate-range missiles in the North Pacific The U.S. military’s purported plan to station intermediate-range missiles in Guam is likely to heighten concerns among some Pacific Island countries of a new era of militarisation of their region, analysts said. The United States withdrew from a decades-old treaty with Russia in 2019 that prohibited use of ground-launched missiles with a range of 500-5,500 kilometers – a decision that potentially gives the U.S. more flexibility to respond to China’s increased military strength, but also faces practical resistance from its allies in Asia. Benar News reports General Charles Flynn, commanding general for U.S. Army Pacific, as telling a international security forum in mid-November that the U.S. intends to deploy HIMARS, SM-6s, and Tomahawk missiles into the “Indo Pacific” – the U.S. term for an area spanning East Asia and the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Taiwan claims that the Chinese military is a growing threat to the region, so it is keeping a tight eye on them. In order to participate in Pacific drills with China’s Shandong aircraft carrier, a flurry of airplanes flew close to the island. The NATO summit in Washington is taking place at the same time as the Chinese military drills. According to a draft communique, Beijing is still posing systemic threats to Europe and its security, and China has turned into a major supporter of Russia’s war effort in Ukraine. Taiwan’s defense ministry unveiled two images: a color photo of a nuclear-capable H-6 bomber and a grainy black-and-white photograph of a Chinese J-16 fighter. The government said the photos were obtained recently, although it did not specify when or where they were taken. Around the island, 66 Chinese military aircraft have been spotted by Taiwan’s defense ministry. 39 of the 66 Chinese military aircraft that Taiwan’s defense ministry has identified as being over the island are heading south and southeast of the country. The ministry announced on Wednesday that it had found 36 planes flying to the Western Pacific to conduct exercises with the Shandong.
