Good Morning and happy Monday! Lets start this week of with style. Just like you all, there are games out there that make our week just pop! From the unique neon simpleness of Super Hot to the comic book craziness of the Borderlands series, there are some crazy cool art styles put together by some crazy talented artists. So with that in mind, it's time for the #QuestionOfTheDay!
Question of the Day: What is your favorite game with a unique art style? What made it so special and unique?
I never thought I'd kinda cross-post from Bookface, but here's my expanded bundle of opinions on the new Fallout series on Prime.
Ok, I'll say it: the Fallout Series is absolutely amazing. As a more than two decades-long fan, it gave me the same feeling as I got when playing the game.
The opening of Vault 33 and ... Well, see for yourself. Welcome to the Wasteland.
This is exactly what I would have given a limb to work on as a set builder and prop maker (the Power Armors, man! The towns! The dusty, broken, rotten buildings and cars! EVERYTHING!)!!! As a gamer, it's something I'd never believe I'd see on the screen, purely because I didn't think producers would have the guts to do it without completing sanitising the product. I thought it would not be adaptable, because in the game series, the lore is so developed that I believed it couldn't be rendered succinctly enough to get the message across without losing its meaning. I was wrong, and I'm glad of it.
The actors are impeccable, pretty much all of them, with interesting characters and actual emotional meat on their irradiated bones, even if Walton Goggins absolutely steals the show as usual. Most actors just can't compete with him (and I'm someone who doesn't like people with Teeth on screen, so that's saying something).
On a less fun note, the opening scene, with everything happening in the world at the moment, is a good reminder of how quickly we can lose everything.
Fallout was never just a video game series, it was a cautionary tale. A tale that has been ignored for a long, long time. But it's out loud again, so maybe listen up.
So, remember: War. War never changes.
I've never played the game, but DANG the Fallout series is mind-blowing. Dystopian/Slasher/Gruesome/Fantastical/Adventure. It's like nothing I've seen before. Set design is great, sound track is.. dystopian. https://lnkd.in/e8Siynyq
In this episode, I talk to Dr. Carlos Gabriel Kelly González who specializes in U.S. Latinx media studies and critical game studies. Currently, Carlos is co-editing the first-ever collection of Latinx video game studies, Coded Latinx: Latinx Gaming and Game Studies in North America, with Dr. Regina Marie Mills. In addition to his research, Carlos is also a published performance poet with his 2019 debut collection, Wounds Fragments Derelict, published with 2Leaf Press. Here, we discuss his newest book, Read Player Juan: Latinx Masculinities and Stereotypes in Video Games. #LatineStories#ReadPlayerJuan#LatinoScholar#latinxmasculinitieshttps://lnkd.in/gayXtBUN
I feel so lucky to be able to work on an indie game alongside this talented team! Always love all the heart & soul our Creative Director Eliana Cadelina pours into her artwork! Her dedication and diligent research serves as constant inspiration to our team, motivating us all to push creative boundaries further with our game.
🕯"Love & Other Monsters" is a gothic sapphic love novel & dating sim we began working on as our senior capstone project, and a game we wanted to continue to refine and expand on even after graduation! While we're still figuring out how to navigate through the exciting world of indie game development, here are some things we learned as students and throughout our game jams:
1. Conduct playtests regularly. Ask for external feedback, and be open to receiving it! Iterate on it. It will make a worlds difference, and can help protect you from internal biases within the team.
2. Be accepting that we may not always have complete creative autonomy or freedom. And that's okay. In return, we learn to *truly* value each other's inputs, collaborate, and compromise in order to guide us towards a unified vision.
3. Brainstorming is fun, but don't be afraid to shed ideas. Recognize that our ideas are not a reflection of our value or self-worth, but rather contributions to a larger creative process. By remaining open to refining our concept and being willing to let go of elements that no longer serve the core vision, we ensure that our project maintains clarity and direction. Remain flexibile.
I hope these lessons will help guide others who are also just getting into game development! Excited to unveil further progress on our indie game as we press forward! 💖
Just did a quick art style study and screencap redraw from Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, featuring the characters from our indie game "Love & Other Monsters"!
I'm so excited to keep working on this project with Alicia Zhen, Malachi Maldonado, Fiona Hsu, and Monserrat Fausto ❤️
