🌟 Wrapping Up an Amazing Summer at Wisk! 🌟 This week marked the end of my 10-week internship as a Materials and Processes Engineering Intern at Wisk Aero, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Boeing. I want to extend a massive thank you to my fantastic mentor Taylor Fernandez and the rest of the M&P Team at Wisk and Aurora Flight Sciences! 🔧 Engineering in Action: This internship was my first step into the industry and gave me direct exposure to what goes into certifying an eVTOL aircraft. Working closely with the fabrication and assembly floor, I witnessed the rate at which progress was being made at Wisk and how my work impacted the process. From the mechanical strength testing and assisting in revising the Wisk Process Specifications, I delved deep into the technical side of composite structures. I also had the opportunity to conduct composite prepreg layups, bonding test coupons, and structural adhesive failure mode analysis. 🚀 Personal Growth: Beyond the technical skills, this experience has been a journey of personal growth. My largest takeaway from the internship came from my chat with Xiang Li, PE. Simplicity is what makes a good engineer great -- no matter how complicated your engineering work is, you must be able to conclude and pass on that information in a simple matter. You must always think about the end-consumer of your work; if the engineers or technicians who will build upon your work cannot understand it, your work as an engineer isn’t complete. This mentality is something that I have begun to incorporate in my life and will stick with me for the rest of my career! 🏆 Key Achievements: - Conducted mechanical testing and data analysis/presentation for surface preparation methods for structural bonding, following ASTM Standards - Assisted the revision of the structural bonding Wisk Process Specifications for Gen 6 aircraft production - Authored test programs, root cause and corrective action investigation for discolored materials, surface resin starvation bonding strength study 🎯 Looking Ahead: As I move forward in my career, I’m eager to continue building on this foundation and experience this summer. I view internships as a chance to learn technical skills and explore different aspects of aerospace engineering. This summer, I was able to explore the structures side of an aircraft. Next summer, I am looking forward to stepping my foot into the aero/performance side of the aircraft as my interest in this field has grown recently from talking to engineers in those fields. I’m excited about the future and look forward to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead! A big thank you to everyone I met at Wisk and to those who supported me along the way. I am currently finishing up my Summer 2024 internship with Shape Corp. It has been an amazing experience being able to work under Dustin Brown as the Manufacturing Engineering Intern. My first major project was Collecting and Analyzing Maintenance Log History to determine what stations of the assembly cell needed improvement. Then my biggest project was a complete Form Press Die revision which is currently being implemented. Due to the maintenance history we determined that the die was creating scrap for the following station due to the tight tolerance of the alignment blocks which caused the component to rotate. Finally, my third biggest project was collecting data on dimple variations for the component. Which concluded that the festo motor pushing the component into the press die is skipping teeth which is pushing the component in too far. Thus why the dimple was too low on the component. Overall, I have enjoyed my experience with Shape as I improved my PFMEA skills due their workshops and working with my team on a PFMEA. Furthermore, improving my CAD skills due to redesigning a complete form press which was a great opportunity. I helped make the die easier on maintenance to disassemble/reassemble and I made the die easier to replace by having a majority of the components be off-the-shelf. I also improved my excel-macro skills by designing a program to sort maintenance logs and generate a dashboard to easily display the history of the machine and help identify patterns in maintenance. Overall, Shape has been an amazing company to work for. I learned and improved many skills. Plus I have learned there is a balance to beingan engineer. Balancing projects, multiple machines, and most importantly balancing work and personal life. Shape truly cares about their employees and promotes mental well-being. Sometimes when you are too far in your head about why a machine is underperforming, taking a walk or stepping away is the best thing you can do. Being a great and happy engineer is about balancing projects, machines, work, and your well-being. Thank you Shape Corp. for this amazing opportunity. Last week, I completed my 6-month internship at Flux Robotics with a final grade of 8.5! 🎉 During this time, I focused on identifying an electromagnetic coil's optimal shape, durability, and capacity, through COMSOL simulations, backed by prior experimental data. These tasks were crucial for Flux Robotics in determining the best method for optimizing the magnet and handling different payloads. This approach is beneficial because it will enable Flux Robotics to use magnets more efficiently. During this internship, I gained significant experience in programming with COMSOL, Inc. Multiphysics, running simulations, and understanding electromagnetic control theory. I'm thrilled to share that my report wasn't just archived; it was directly integrated with my design and used in the first animal trial! 🐽 This exciting development highlights the immediate impact of the practical applications of my research.
