How do you handle these situations? A candidate sent me a note after not being considered for a journeyman level position, as he was not indentured in a trade of any kind and had no relevant experience. Among other things he asked, '~how am I going to get experience, when no F#&king companies will actually try to help for once.' Notwithstanding the language, my response for him and all like him trying to get into a trade was this, 'The best thing I can suggest, M, is for you to visit https://lnkd.in/g9Ge_ewi, and apply to get into a trade, then start handing your resume out at businesses that fit the trade you are most interested in working towards. We need people with relevant training and experience when we are recruiting for journeyman level roles. I'm sure it's frustrating. If you want to be an electrician, contact larger companies directly and ask if you can meet with them to set up a shadow day. Make sure that you are prepared. First impressions are important.~'

I put together a presentation of my thoughts on balancing the oil and gas markets between its well-formed traditions and the transformative forces unleashed by #energytransition. These thoughts were shared at the just-concluded Society of Petroleum Engineers International careers fair, which was sponsored by the human energy company Chevron and the oil and gas recruitment firm Oil & Gas Jobs by Rigzone. 1. I set the scene by describing the oil and gas markets/world as volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous. 2. The rise of in the interest in "Energy Transition" - interest tripled in 4 years from 2020. 3. Did you know about the 7-pillars of decarbonization effort? I covered these too! 4. I covered the geopolitical effects on the markets emphasizing recent developments, but also recalled the origins of the #IEA as birthed in a time of crisis 5. I turn our gaze to what the future holds - investment, oil price, production, and where the growth in energy consumption will come from. 6. A primer on how to execute the balancing act. Our resident interviewer, Wayne Brogan, is at it again, interviewing Kim Coles and Labourer Forperson at one of our projects near Edmonton, Alberta. What is your trade? And what led you to this career? My husband and Wayne Crawley requested that I work with PCL Energy as a labourer foreperson, so I did. Are you interested in gaining a trade certification? Yes! I am currently applying for a Material Technician apprenticeship. What has a career in the trades done for you? My family has been able to live a more comfortable and less stressful life, enjoy more holidays, and spend more time with my family. That's why I do this; it's for me and my family. Do you have a mentor? Would you like to be a mentor? I don't have a mentor as of now, but I wouldn't mind mentoring anyone interested in the job. Okay, let's pivot to some more fun questions. What is your favourite thing right now? (song, food, podcast, activity)? I am remodelling a 1991 golf cart; I can't get enough of that project. Speaking of projects, is there a dream or favourite project to work on? Haha, yeah, I would like to finish my backyard projects. What is your favourite type of music, concert, or festival? The 80's and 90's. What did you want to be when you grew up? A marine biologist. Thanks again, Kim, for your time and hard work in helping us build our projects.

A class doesn't replace experience! Today with people in high demand and the average person that takes care of a building, or complex, or a facility, not staying more than 2-3 years before they move on to another job. No one ever gets enough experience to navigate the liabilities. HVAC equipment that is not maintained properly can be deadly. It is my opinion we are trying to buy our way out of liability with classrooms and not field experience which is irreplaceable. Too many apprentices are working as a field technician who do not have the experience needed to do the job. It takes years before a person who has gone through an apprenticeship before they are a technician that understand the liabilities involved the in the job. Do people forget that difference between a boiler and a bomb is basically the art of slow combustion and a few controls that must be maintained properly? I am amazed how many technicians work on a combustion appliance that do not have a combustion analyzer. If your not measuring your just guessing. Would you hire a school bus driver who just got their drivers license because he can technically drive a buss around the parking lot?

Rounding out our National Careers Week profile series - we meet Samantha Bennett, an Electrician and Assistant Site Supervisor Transport for NSW. What do you love about working in the construction industry?   I get the chance to help build and shape the electrical infrastructure for our future. My job is so different each day and it’s amazing to look back at completed projects and think, wow I did that. Can you tell us a little bit about what your role entails?   As a HV Authorised Operator I can complete high voltage and 1500V DC isolations so projects can complete work safely. I assist projects with design investigation works, defect or breakdown support and I also help plan commissioning events. I also assist with facilitating the project and supervising the work on site. Every project is different so it’s never boring! How did you get your start in the construction industry?   I really struggled at first, as six years ago it was much more difficult to get into a trade as a woman. After attempting university a few times, I completed my Cert II in Electrotechnology. However, it was a pre-apprenticeship program with Sydney Trains that helped get me into my Substation Technician apprenticeship. I completed a Cert IV in Substations/Power Systems, got my electrical license and now work for Transport for NSW. I enjoy it so much! What is your advice to women thinking of joining the industry?   Do it! I know it can be daunting at first, but I have no regrets. Try pre-apprenticeship programs, work experience and whatever you can to get some experience. There are so many different trades to try. It’s an amazing career path that isn’t just for men and I guarantee you’ll be able to do things you never thought you could!

My internship tasked me with analyzing critical benchmarks, known as Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). These metrics were instrumental in ensuring that every department within the company functioned efficiently, prioritized safety, and minimized environmental impact. From meticulously evaluating production efficiency to keeping a watchful eye on safety incident rates, this experience provided a holistic understanding of the intricate workings of this industry. It wasn't just about numbers; I also delved into the latest advancements in extraction technologies, witnessing firsthand how innovation is shaping the future of this resource sector. For those eager to stay abreast of the ever-evolving trends and technologies redefining the oil and gas landscape, I highly recommend exploring resources from esteemed organizations like the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the American Petroleum Institute (API). Their insights offer valuable perspectives on this dynamic and ever-changing industry.
