Great infographic. In creating an excellent workplace culture, we frequently meet a range of personalities and traits that add to a lively and dynamic setting. Motivated by the perceptive illustration "11 Positive Workplace Animals," I have understood the significance of adopting various traits based on the role, circumstance, or task. I resonate with the Chimp, Kangaroo, Butterfly, and Tiger: Chimp (Leadership Exemplar) Traits: Confident, motivational, guiding. Emulation: Engaging in mentorship, sharing expertise, and nurturing development. Application: In leadership, I aim to be a role model, leading my team with assurance and motivation. Kangaroo (Versatile Innovator) Traits: Adaptable, resilient, inventive. Emulation: Welcoming change, fostering creative thinking, maintaining flexibility. Application: Faced with change, I embrace the Kangaroo's adaptability, swiftly adjusting and innovating to uncover unique solutions. Butterfly (Innovative Catalyst) Traits: Welcoming change, idea generator, innovation promoter. Emulation: Receptive to novel concepts, stimulating creativity, aiding in transformation. Application: I draw on the Butterfly's spirit in transformative projects, encouraging fresh perspectives and spearheading innovation for significant results. Tiger (Strategic Visionary) Traits: Concentrated, methodical, resolute. Emulation: Delving into data analysis, planning strategically, and executing decisive actions. Application: In tasks requiring strategic insight and critical analysis, I take on the Tiger's approach, thoroughly evaluating scenarios to make well-informed decisions. The variety of traits highlights the complex nature of professional roles. Depending on the situation, we may need to transition from strategic thinking to agile adapting or from initiating change to setting an example. By embracing this versatility, we can contribute more effectively to our teams and organizations. Consider the workplace traits that you identify with. "We're a family..." = we want something from you. "The business has decided..." = we're taking something from you. Employers code-switch like this often when they communicate with us. Sometimes they approach us as a group of well-intentioned humans. Other times they approach us as an entity; a configuration of systems, processes, priorities and needs. I'm not interested in villainizing either approach. I'm interested in how we as employees can expect this and navigate it to our benefit. Here's what has helped me most in this area: 1. Root my self-worth in who I am and not in what I produce - this increases confidence. 2. Limit my emotional attachment to my employer/job - this increases clarity. 3. Take others' behavior at face value - this increases actionable insight. 4. Prioritize the life I want over my employer's success - this increases performance, motivation and mobility. I'd like to introduce you all to the youngest of my three kids: Cora. Being a dad is one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I’ve probably learned more about life from parenting than from any professional development resource. As you admire Cora's cuteness (and trust me, she’s VERY cute with a touch of sass), you might notice something quirky: she's still closing her eyes while wearing goggles. For the longest time, we couldn't get her to open her eyes while swimming, so we thought goggles would do the trick. Yet, the habit is so ingrained that she keeps them shut, despite having the perfect tool to enjoy the water more fully. Sound familiar? Growing businesses often fall into the same trap. Business leaders hire people to help, acknowledging their own bandwidth limits. But instead of training and trusting their new hires, they try to do everything themselves. Sometimes it's due to a lack of confidence in the training, but often it's because they don't trust the employee to do things their way. As a result, they hit their limits, overwork themselves, and create single points of failure by not delegating effectively. If this sounds like your life story, here are some tips to help you move forward, take a breath, and find more joy in your work: Map out your processes: Documenting your processes is like writing a recipe. A written process not only improves training but also acts as a lifesaver when things go awry. It’s story time! 📖 Raise your hand 🙋🏻♀️ if you have you heard “That’s Not My Job” OR maybe you’ve even said it yourself? 🫣 These are powerful words for someone to say and I happen to think they come from a place of operating below the line. When someone chooses not to take personal #responsibility for how their actions and #behaviors impact the outcome, no matter what that might be, it’s likely because they are not experiencing a sense of #purpose or #connection. With organizational culture, everyone is responsible for their own experience. But it is essential for everyone to “buy in” to owning the results and knowing what a good job looks like- no matter what your title is. If the CEO doesn’t demonstrate the core values and behaviors of the company and own the results then why would you expect supervisors and employees to? When there is a mentality of “it’s not my job” in the workplace, it’s the client or customer that really gets the short end of the stick!
