Its rewarding to see such productive and scalable implementation of technology (especially if there is a little personal contribution towards making it into real product 😃)
I’m excited to announce we’re expanding our Digital Shelf Label program to 2,300 stores by 2026. The simplification our DSL program brings to our stores is a game-changer. DSLs allow us to update prices more efficiently, simplify stock replenishments and make order picking faster than ever. The Pick to Light and Stock to Light feature flashes an LED light on the shelf tag to signal where an item is located allowing for faster stocking and picking. The program frees up valuable time our associates can now use providing even better customer service. Special shoutout to Daniela Boscan for explaining how DSLs work and to our partners at VusionGroup. Read more about this announcement here: https://lnkd.in/gMrMR2aQ
Walmart continues to lead the retail and grocery industry. ESLs demonstrate Walmart's commitment to innovation.
Now Imagine a world where
1. price changes are nimble and can be executed with a click of mouse.
2. price on shelf label is the same as your pricing system and store POS server
3. price on an item is not dependent on store operations labor (so that the store can focus on the customer).
4. the retailer could execute a new planogram / category set without having to change out shelf labels.
5. on the shelf availability could be monitored in real-time, and restocked just in time
What will be the next step? Will bots starts coming out to restock the shelves? Walmart is already using bots to pick orders in their Lakeland DC...it just makes sense, that this is the next logical step. What do you think?

This is exciting! I worked on the POC (proof of concept) while at Sam's Club Innovation in 2015. For months, I worked with 3 ESL suppliers (it was called electronic shelf label then) and our data file team. Back then, there was so many legacy systems that had hard coded rules from years ago and multiple systems that didn’t talk directly to each other. Unwinding the massive spiderweb to hand over to a 3rd party was difficult.
The concept at Sam’s made since to test because they were closed at night allowing the ESL (DSL) to flip to “replenish” mode and allow stockers to quickly replenish back to an item.
The screen could also rotate to give customers more information such as details about the product or QR code to order an extended assortment online right from the shelf.
It was truly a revolutionary idea! The timing was a little off to launch and was put on hold to invest in other priority strategies directed by then CEO.
I remember a couple of years later, someone from Walmart innovation team called me inquiring about my work on ESL (DSL). I sent them all my research, the suppliers I’d worked with, our plan on battery life and disposal etc. I was so excited to hear the project was alive again!
When you work for a company for 26 years, you get to be a part of something’s at the ideation phase, the middle, or the launch. When I walk a store and see these tags - I just smile!
Way to go Walmart! I’m super curious if one of my 3 POC suppliers were chosen!? 😅😅
Thanks for the update Greg Cathey!

This is the type of meaningful work simplification and leveraging of technology that truly makes a difference in associate workload.
I hope other big retailers can commit to this type of innovation. Simplifying work not only improves the team member experience it also saves the bottom line.
Would be interesting to see what kind of net impact DSL has on carbon emissions/waste versus traditional paper.

In the spring of 2004, four independent retailers began looking at the possibility of launching a private label program to revolutionize the industry - fueled by the forces of expanding customer awareness, increased competition, and a changing industry.
To meet these challenges, the group founded an association that allowed for contractual business arrangements within the industry and accountability between retailers for shared success.
Fast forward to today, nearly 20 years later. INFRA comprises almost 330 retailers, 560 storefronts, and counting! 🤝🌟

When a major retailer fulfills more than 50% of their online orders in store, they need to use a network that ensures a seamless experience for customers and sales associates. You may not handle the same volume of orders as Home Depot but you need a network as reliable as the one they use. Take a look at this article from Retail Customer Experience showing how Home Depot relied on Aruba Edge Service Platform through HPE GreenLake to prepare for the future of retailing.
