PH21 Gallery presents: 'Feminine / Masculine' – A Curated International Photography Exhibition, April 4–27, 2024 - Portrayals of femininity and masculinity are, without a doubt, central to numerous art forms, with photography being no exception. The past few decades have sparked often heated discussions and criticisms of past, recent, and current photographic practices due to their lack of reflection on the assumptions, stereotypes, and prejudices surrounding approaches to femininity and masculinity. Both fine art and commercial works have been critiqued for the potential consequences of their approach and presentation. Historically, femininity and masculinity have been conceived as oppositions, complements to each other, or positions on a continuum, among other perspectives. There are scarcely any ways of portraying femininity and masculinity that would not be considered trivial, conservative, pretentious, demeaning, distasteful, clichéd, or even offensive by some. It often seems that everything has been said and photographed on this subject; however, it is impossible to ignore the persistence of the theme in our contemporary visual culture. What can we still value and possibly revive from the rich history of photography? Are there any novel ways left to approach this subject with a fresh critical eye? We welcome submissions from all photographers interested in this subject, aiming to showcase their work to a broader international audience through the exposure provided by PH21 Gallery. PH21 Gallery presents: 'Personality: Contemporary Portraiture' – A Curated International Photography Exhibition, June 1–25, 2024 - Portraiture emerged as one of the most prominent genres of depictive media early in the history of the visual arts, and the tacit or explicit rules, conventions and cultural expectations have always influenced the ways by which artists approached the genre. Photography is no exception; numerous different and characteristic styles of portraiture emerged throughout the history of the medium. Today we live in an exciting new era for portraiture. There has never been a time in human history when so many portraits and self-portraits were produced day after day as in the era of digital technologies. Photographers have responded to the cultural, social and technological changes by reinterpreting the age-old genre of portraiture, and it is always an exciting and rewarding task to organize an exhibition for some of the recent achievements in the field. PH21 Gallery invites photographers to submit their work for a group exhibition themed Personality: Contemporary Portraiture. We are looking for submissions from all photographers who are interested in this genre, and who would like to share their work with a wider international audience through the exposure of PH21 Gallery. The Decisive Moment is the title of what is widely hailed as the most influential photobook ever. When first published it was thought as revolutionary because it advanced the idea of photography as an art form that by virtue of being the only record of ephemeral moments stands for the essence of those events itself. The book has been described as a Bible for photographers, a philosophical legacy to photojournalism and its author, Henri Cartier-Bresson, is revered.   There are 126 pictures in the book accompanied by a lengthy 4,500-word preface. In it Henri outlines and reflects upon the life experiences that molded his photographic process. For whatever reason he penciled his ideas in the difficult, pompous, stile that art critics and galleries use still today. "To me, photography is the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as of a precise organization of forms which give that event its proper expression. Inside movement there is one moment at which the elements in motion are in balance."   What he says is that is better to understand the reasons for taking a picture, to include in the picture a lot of things related to what is happening, to click at the height of the action and that the picture is nicely composed. Some people argue that his propositions are intrinsic to photography and obvious to everyone. Possibly, but Mr. Bresson was the first one to write about it and to do it in a style that gave a lot of weight to the concepts. Besides, as challenging as his writings might be his pictures are easy to understand and touch everyone.   And that maybe the reason why his pictures are emulated not only by photojournalists chronicling extremes of the human condition but also fashion photographers. We usually assume that faces are necessary components of portraiture; we may, however, learn just as much about the character, the personality of a person by looking at images that depict other parts of their bodies, show us the objects or places associated with them. Not focusing on the face may open up a new dimension of interpretation. Our Portraits Beyond Faces exhibition is dedicated to this challenging divergence from the more conventional approaches to the genre. As a passionate photographer specializing in event, portrait, and product photography, I continuously strive to capture the essence of cultural celebrations, individual stories, and the unique attributes of products. One of my notable works is from the Amazigh New Year event at Cité des Métiers et des Compétences. The photograph of a girl in traditional Amazigh attire not only highlights the cultural richness but also demonstrates the technical precision that goes into each shot. The importance of shooting angles (angles de prise de vue) cannot be overstated. They define the perspective and narrative of the image, creating depth and context. In this particular photo, the chosen angle accentuates the elegance of the traditional clothing while maintaining a respectful representation of cultural heritage. Lighting (éclairage) is another critical element that transforms a good photo into a great one. By carefully adjusting natural and artificial light sources, I was able to highlight the intricate details of the Amazigh attire, bringing out the vibrant colors and textures that are so essential to its beauty. Furthermore, understanding the elements that make up the image (éléments constitutifs de l'image) such as composition, background, and focus, ensures that each photograph tells a compelling story. The interplay between these elements in my work aims to evoke emotions and convey the significance of the captured moments.
