Antoine Arnault said the quiet part out loud. The company intends to prioritize revenue growth ahead of any commitments to #scope3 #carbonemissions reductions. 💰Between 2019 and 2021, LVMH group revenues increased 48% while Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions declined by 11%. Impressive.  🍾 But, over the same time period, LVMH group Scope 3 emissions increased by 16%…representing an intensity improvement of 21% per unit. 🧳 But, given that Scope 3 represents > 95% of carbon emissions….overall carbon emissions continue to increase. Here is why. According to Antoine Arnault,... > “We are pretty good students when it comes to #climatechange , but expanding the business is the priority”  > “We are the champions of continued growth and certainly not of decline. I don’t believe that our [competitors] are Marxists a heart. This is our philosophy [and] it suits us.” > “We believe in data, science and the reality of things….not in some sort of incantations that we could make to clear our conscience.” The incantations to which Arnault is referring are the commitments of competing groups, such as Kering, to reduce absolution (not intensity based) carbon emissions by 40% by 2030. Arnault's declarations that (1) growth is paramount and (2) that competitors are unlikely to deliver on their SBTI commitments is likely to be borne out (see lululemon, Nike, H&M commitments vs. trajectory as but three large company illustrations). “We are the champions of continued growth and certainly not of decline. I don’t believe that our [competitors] are Marxists at heart. This is our philosophy [and] it suits us,” Antoine Arnault I recently came across an article featuring an interview with Antoine Arnault from LVMH. While many companies are setting specific goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, LVMH is taking a different approach. They are focusing on their own environmental standards and making progress in certain areas. However, the catch is that their Scope 3 emissions, which account for a staggering 95% of their carbon footprint, have actually increased. Business growth is always a top priority - a reality that requires acknowledgment. That's why regulations and consumer behavior play important roles in shaping the direction and encouraging businesses to implement initiatives that align with their priorities and public expectations.

As I am heading to @biofabricate summit I am reposting this to check with the competitors as well as top innovators and investors whether - or rather how - a responsible future is possible for this industry.

Good intentions lose to financial pressures? Only when Arnault (and others) frame the challenge within business-as-usual terms - a false dichotomy of growth vs. sustainability? And growth vs. marxism? This is lazy thinking, getting us nowhere. We need a different mindset (Both+And thinking), to harness radical innovation + redesign the business model - finding new ways of making money through non-consumption. https://lnkd.in/e2etsGqG Just saying it can't be done is no longer good enough in the era of polycrisis. The new winners are finding the new 'sweet spot', where sustainability + commercial advantage converge. Responsible growth means increasing sales income while reducing the footprint.
