🚀 Investing in African Startups: Insights and Opportunities 🌍 As the African startup ecosystem continues evolving, it presents exciting opportunities and unique challenges. Recently, we hosted a fireside chat at AfroTechFest featuring Yvonne Bajela of LocalGlobe and Nimmy Mathews of Amazon Web Services (AWS). Their insights shed light on the current state of investing in African startups and supporting underrepresented founders. Here are the key takeaways 1. Emerging Tech Hubs: Major cities like Lagos, Nairobi, and Cape Town are becoming pivotal tech hubs. The growth in sectors such as fintech, agritech, and health tech is remarkable, with startups creating solutions that cater to local needs while having global relevance. 2. Funding Hurdles: Despite the promise, African startups, especially those led by black women, face significant funding challenges. Less than 1% of global venture capital reaches black women founders, underscoring a critical gap in the investment landscape. 3. Opportunities for Change: Both Nimmy and Yvonne emphasized the importance of targeted programs, mentorship, and partnerships to support diverse founders. Increasing representation in investment decision-making is crucial for fostering innovation. 4. Navigating Challenges: Entrepreneurs must navigate infrastructure gaps, complex regulations, and global competition. However, success stories like Flutterwave show that African startups can achieve unicorn status and compete on the world stage. 5. The discussion concluded with practical advice for founders navigating this complex landscape: 📌 Develop a deep understanding of your market and its unique challenges. 📌 Build solutions that can scale beyond local markets. 📌 Leverage technology creatively to overcome infrastructure limitations. 📌 Network relentlessly and seek out mentorship opportunities. 📌 Be adaptable while staying true to your core mission. The road ahead may be challenging, but the opportunities in Africa’s startup ecosystem are immense. 🌟 Let’s continue to support and empower underrepresented founders as they drive innovation and impact across the continent. Extreme activism might sometimes miss the nuanced benefits, but it’s a reminder to startups that fair and ethical work environments are non-negotiable. True, digital platforms have revolutionized opportunities for independent and unskilled laborers—providing income flexibility, especially compared to the grueling conditions of the industrial era. These platforms have empowered many who previously struggled to find work, giving them a more direct, flexible way to earn. But here’s the reality check: Without accountability, the flexibility that platforms promote can quickly give way to exploitation. Gig work should empower workers, not keep them on the edge of economic insecurity. To Platform Leaders: Don't see criticism as an attack. See it as free consultation for building sustainable businesses that truly benefit everyone. To Critics: Keep pushing, but acknowledge progress. Your pressure ensures platforms don't prioritize growth over worker welfare. The goal isn't to return to the past, but to build a future where innovation and worker welfare go hand in hand. https://lnkd.in/gaPZXypc

You are an inspiration with your example on how to develop a business Mustafa Salam in #Irak and in #Finland.
Business builder, Private sector development activist, Between IRAQ, Istanbul & MENA, Investment, Research and Accelerators
I had the pleasure to meet the Ambassador of Finland in Iraq Her Excellency Anu Saarela and Liisa Maunula the deputy head of mission, in addition to Mustafa Salam the CEO of the Iraqi/finnish Corrsy startup. Through this meeting, we’ve had the chance to discuss the areas on which we can collaborate to further develop the Iraqi private sector and support the digital transformation process as well. We also discussed the investment horizon in Iraq and looked into opportunities on bringing Finnish Companies to support the private sector with the presence of one of the Iraqi/Finnish Companies. At KAPITA Business Hub we aspire to bring new opportunities to our private sector in order to enhance and improve our economic status by working on successful collaborations to fortify the Iraqi ecosystem and open opportunities for different stakeholders to play a role in the development process. #investBetter #Iraq Mustafa Salam

In Uganda approximately 80% of the population is rural based while 90% of lawyers are based in urban areas. Legal innovation and technology in such a case is critical in bridging the gap between lawyers and rural clients. This calls for developing legal tech solutions with the end users in mind for legal tech to have impact. Essentially a delicate balance between the legal tech solutions designed to make legal easier, quicker, and cheaper should have an element of supporting both business and impact.
