Kenneth Shropshire’s Post

Emeritus professor at the Wharton School. Sports business, law and society expert.

I am stepping away from my role leading the Wharton Coalition for Equity and Opportunity (CEO) and serving as Senior Advisor to Dean Erika James effective July 1, 2024. I remain an emeritus member of The Wharton School faculty. Business, legal, and social issues related to sports will continue to be my primary focus. The end of the academic year, with Wharton CEO well underway on a positive trajectory, is the right time. I remain a Jim Brown type of retiring guy, never lamenting my decision to step back at the right moment: https://shorturl.at/pTwRW. It has been an unbelievable two years launching a key new pillar of The Wharton School. The leadership of the Wharton CEO is now in better hands with Managing Director Fareeda Griffith, Ph.D. continuing in place, taking on the lead role along with the great work of Madison S. as Senior Content Producer. My best move in my two years of developing the Coalition was hiring these two outstanding leaders. During my tenure, we accomplished many milestones, including launching the Opportunity Matters podcast series in collaboration with SiriusXM, developing a research database, producing a number of faculty research toolkits, reviving the Race & Sports series, hosting roundtables with great partners like TIAA Institute, and organizing the Second Chance Month Conference alongside Wharton WORKS, led by Prof. Damon Phillips. We also launched the Equity and Opportunity Insight Conversations with faculty and other business schools and academics, collaborated with the Penn Medicine, University of Pennsylvania Health System and Wharton’s inaugural Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Office, led by Renita Miller, PhD, on the Wellness Summit to bring health and financial wellness resources to the West Philadelphia community. Check out what we’ve accomplished and will continue at ceo.wharton.upenn.edu. I will serve as a Faculty Fellow of Wharton CEO and continue to help where asked. I will also, of course, continue to support Dean Erika James where requested and remain indebted to her for this two-year encore return to Wharton. Onward, beyond Wharton, my professional home since 1986, I will continue my focus on sports and other ongoing and new board and advisory leadership roles with entities like Moelis & Company, the National Football League (NFL), and Overtime Elite. Proudly, I continue as the Acting Director of the Jackie Robinson Museum. I’ll also seek to become more active in works to better our adopted home, Philadelphia. But you’ll still find us in the other usual haunts. To paraphrase a young Mike Tyson, it wouldn’t be tragic to “fade into Bolivia” either, so long as there is a golf course there: https://lnkd.in/g7SyFh3k. Finally, thanks to all who have assisted in getting Wharton CEO underway, including faculty, business entities, alums, and friends. I look forward to continuing to work with all of you as well!

Kudos to a true icon in sports law and business leadership, so rare to find someone so accomplished yet so willing to help. My transition from a team executive to academia and media would simply not have happened without you. True gem in the industry..

Well...well now....congratulations!! Kenneth Shropshire. We have been friends for at least 40 years now, and in that time some of the things I have admired most about you is that through your guidance and leadership you have the ability to give people the space to create a path for themselves through vulnerability, passion and mentorship that opens doors and opportunities that may have never been discovered. I hope that this new chapter for you is everything you hope and the fact that you're actually quoting Mike Tyson, I'm thinking that what lies ahead will be well thought out, but "easy breezy" as well. 😃 Maybe now you have a moment to return my phone calls. 🤷🏾😮 #ijs Onward & Upward
