Hey everyone, I recently encountered a new challenge in my agency which has a Union. Having previously worked in a non-bargaining unit agency, this transition has been eye-opening. Today, I learned is that as a supervisor, using the word “please” in an email when directing tasks is considered non-directive. It’s a bit baffling, isn’t it? If you want to be directive, you have to skip the pleasantries and be curt. We want our employees to have a positive workplace and give them a sense of well-being isn’t a bridge too far, IMO. But unions and lawyers seem to have stripped away common decency. It’s like we’re caught in a paradox: be directive or be kind, but not both. As an organization, we need to strike a balance. How do we maintain efficiency while showing our team members kindness? I know there are alternative ways to foster a positive work environment and positive communication. To double down, I personally believe this approach compromises the strategic vision of an agency when gives employees a sense of insecurity. As a former Marine, I know there is a place and time to be straight to the point. I haven’t lost my touch and not afraid to break out the knife hand. 😉 Being a civilian for roughly 20 years I’ve come to realize that the employee/employer relationship is vital and it costs nothing to be kind. What do you think? Share your thoughts.

What is a reasonable adjustment? The duty to make reasonable adjustments is triggered if an employee or a job applicant meets the definition of disability contained in the Equality Act 2010 (EA). The employee must have a physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on their ability to do normal day-to-day activities. The law requires an employer to treat a disabled employee more favourably than non-disabled colleagues in order to reduce or remove any substantial disadvantage caused by the combination of the individual’s disability and elements of the workplace or job. The aim of the law is to eliminate barriers that stop disabled people participating in work on an equal basis to others. To read more, join the HR Inner Circle today!

🤔The Misunderstood HR Chronicles 📚 "In the kingdom of Officeopolis, a common misconception floated like a mischievous rumor – that HR (Human Resources) had an easy gig. One day, a brave soul dared to voice it. 🗣️ "You're in HR, right? Your job must be a cakewalk, just dealing with paperwork and coffee breaks!" The HR Enchanter chuckled, shaking their head. "Ah, my friend, if only it were that simple." HR, it turned out, was more like juggling flaming swords while riding a unicycle on a tightrope. There were conflict dragons to slay, recruitment spells🪄to cast, and the delicate dance of performance evaluations. The HR Enchanter had to navigate a maze of policies and legal incantations, ensuring the workplace was a bastion of order.🧐 As the brave soul's eyes widened in realization, they exclaimed, "I had no idea! HR is a mystical art, not a walk in the park!"😲 The HR Enchanter nodded, imparting a nugget of wisdom, "Indeed, my friend. Behind the scenes, we're weaving a tapestry of balance, empathy, and a touch of HR magic. So remember, next time you see an HR wizard at work – it's no joke, it's a short story filled with twists, turns, and a sprinkle of enchantment." 🤝❤️ #hrinsights #talentacquisition #peopleandculture

February is Human Relations Month, a time to focus on strengthening connections between people in our organizations and communities. Cultivating positive human relations should be a priority all year round. But this month is a good reminder to double down on our efforts. This month, we encourage everyone to find new ways to connect with their colleagues. Reach out to someone you don't know well and learn about their role. Recognize teammates for their contributions. Share positive feedback and praise. Have open discussions about challenges and how we can solve them as a team. Small gestures go a long way. We should also look for opportunities to form connections across different departments and levels of leadership. Shared experiences build understanding and trust. And relationships often span well beyond the workplace—we're all people first. At Exela's HR Solutions, we are proud of the community we've built. But there is always room for improvement. When people feel disconnected at work, it impacts their performance and well-being. Human Relations Month is a chance to redouble our efforts to improve inclusion, communication, and collaboration. What are your thoughts on building relationships this month? Let us know in the comments below. #TeamBuilding #WorkplaceCulture #CommunityBuilding #HRConsulting #HRSolutions #ExelaHRSolutions
