Interesting article, the gist of which is by increasing the soil’s organic carbon (e.g. by composting, no till technique or not over tilling) helps to reduce atmospheric CO2 levels and improve its water-holding capacity, making crops more resilient to heat stress during periods of low rainfall. Enhanced soil biology, water and nutrient-use efficiency contribute to better overall soil health, as are the broader community and environment benefits from climate change mitigation and a more resilient food system. Leveraging carbon credits could be a great catalyst for the adoption of more sustainable practices that not only enhance SA farmers’ resilience to climate change, but will ultimately also create value for farmers, their soils, the environment and communities at large.

🌱 Biochar Research 🌍 I love sharing some valuable information on the powers of biochar. In a recent article titled “Scientometric analysis and scientific trends on biochar application as soil amendment” by Mohammadreza Kamali and team. 1️⃣ Nitrogen Leaching & Greenhouse Gases: Between 2010 and 2013, research highlighted biochar’s ability to eliminate nitrogen leaching in the soil and mitigate the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. 2️⃣ Stability of Biochar: Compared to common fertilizers and liming agents used in agriculture, biochar has shown a more stable composition and remains semi-permanent. This is a significant advantage as these fertilizers often vanish in a relatively short time, contributing to the release of high amounts of greenhouse gases. 3️⃣ Climate Change Mitigation: The application of biochar, besides carbon storage in soils, can be considered as a tool to mitigate climate change. These findings underscore the potential of biochar in sustainable agriculture and climate change mitigation. Working in the field of soil carbon and being a political "fence sitter", I frequently have to navigate the complex and often polarizing discussions around atmospheric carbon, credit schemes, and the concerns about big government "mission creep". These topics often stir people up and result in an emotional response. However, through my experiences, I've crafted a way to articulate the vital importance of carbon sequestration and soil health in a manner that resonates across the political spectrum (usually). 🌱 The focal point of carbon conversation? Agricultural soil. Try starting with: "The only place we should care about the concentration of carbon is in our agricultural soil." Then, wow them with these interesting facts: 💦 Did you know that the chief contributor to the greenhouse effect isn't CO2 or methane, but water vapor (~60-70%)? A 1% increase in soil organic carbon translates to a whopping 300,000 litres of additional water holding capacity per hectare (just in the top 1-30 cm). This not only fosters drought resilience but also stabilizes microclimates, reducing erosion and runoff (https://lnkd.in/g-CG4-54). 🌾 Enhancing Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) reduces our dependence on synthetic fertilizers. It acts like a slow-release nutrient container, improves soil structure, and boosts water and nutrient uptake by plants. #titlestory 📢Recycling MDPI is inviting you to discover our new Title Story entitled "Rural Urban Nutrient Partnership (RUN): Life Cycle Assessment of Multi Nutrient Recovery from Kitchen #Waste and #Blackwater" 📷https://lnkd.in/g99kybQ9 Newly developed and innovative RUN technology aims to recover nutrients from urban wastewater (blackwater) and biowaste (kitchen waste). The development of RUN technology has been supported by the life cycle assessment (LCA) in order to identify hotspots and trade-offs. While the performance of the process at a laboratory scale did not show any environmental benefits from P recovery, the LCA results have helped to improve the environmental performance at the following scale-up step. The recovery of P on a technical scale was environmentally beneficial, especially in terms of the global warming potential (GWP). However, there were still some trade-offs, e.g., freshwater and marine eutrophication were slightly higher compared to conventional P fertilizer production. Given that P is considered a critical raw material and that climate change is probably the most pressing environmental issue, RUN technology has the potential to deliver on both domains.
