📘 The research Transforming Philanthropy: mapping of independent grantmaking organizations for civil society in the areas of socio-environmental justice and community development in Brazil is now available in the English version on Transforma, Comuá Network’s content hub. The study is the first of its kind in Brasil. It provides an overview of 31 organizations in different regions, bringing light to these ways of carrying out community philanthropy and socio-environmental justice and their significant contribution to the fight for access to rights. ICYMI: 📊 Our new report "Field in Focus" shows that the relatively small democracy funding field is growing & changing rapidly. We explore the uncertainties of the field's future, as well as the opportunities for future impact: 🏘️ Community building — including supporting and engaging newer funders. 💬 Understanding grantee experiences — especially BIPOC-led and -serving organizations. 📝 Defining democracy work and its focal areas to bolster future efforts to map the field. ☎️ Strengthening coordination across funders and across intermediaries. 🔍 Identifying and filling gaps for key subfields of democracy work that are underfunded.

In April, the Impact Ecosystem Collective gathered to focus on the intersection of Economic Development and Youth & Education impact. Participants toured Elpis Enterprises, a nonprofit organization that provides young people ages 16 to 23 opportunities to gain paid work experiences while gaining the skills, knowledge, and confidence necessary to secure job placement and end the cycle of homelessness. The Impact Ecosystem Collective (IEC) brings community members together to learn about local social enterprises, get connected to resources, discuss common challenges within the impact ecosystem, and identify and implement solutions. Our April insights included three Community Asks: 1️⃣ Resources or ideas related to funding sabbaticals for leaders of social enterprises 2️⃣ Commitments to source goods and services from social enterprises - or ideas to make this easier! 3️⃣ Board members of philanthropic organizations, insights or opportunities to speak with boards about unrestricted funding. 🌟 NEW ARTICLE 🌟 📚 We're thrilled to announce the release of the latest article written by members of our international (USA) and Quebec Hubs: Josh Newton, Mirle Rabinowitz Bussell, Maria Martinez-Cosio, Nancy Pole, and Jean-Marc Fontan. 🌐 Abstract: Though the concept of place-based philanthropy is common parlance in community development scholarship and practice, there is still uncertainty around its meaning due to the multidisciplinary nature of its study and definitional variation among and between scholars and practitioners. This article presents findings from a recently edited volume created by a binational research team. Ten cases of philanthropic initiatives were explored to develop a transnational understanding of foundation engagement in place-based philanthropy. Place-based philanthropy was explored by considering collaboration with other stakeholders, initiative evaluation, systems change efforts, and issues of power, equity, and justice. Our findings suggest that place-based philanthropy among foundations is heterogeneous. While some foundations adhere to traditional forms of place-based philanthropy, others are pushing the boundaries of this type of work. This article urges both academics and practitioners to reimagine place-based philanthropy for transformative purposes. 🔍 Don't miss out on this thought-provoking read! Are you involved in social impact, regional economic and community development, or place-based change? There is a conference in September just for you, along with a bursary ticket that may have your name on it! But only if you apply by 12 April 2024. There are currently 10 bursaries available including: - 5 x bursaries for social enterprises who create employment opportunities provided by Westpac Foundation and - 5 x bursaries for regionally based social impact practitioners Each bursary includes the conference ticket and some may, on application also include travel and accommodation. While social challenges are not unique to the regions, the solutions to these problems must be relevant to place. Social Impact in the Regions (SIITR) explores a range of tools, techniques, beliefs and practices to better enable conference delegates to create more impact in your regional community. SIITR 2024 will be held in Kempsey, NSW building on the Ready Communities program. This will be the first entirely place-based iteration of the event held in the local showground and the community’s CBD.
