I just returned home this weekend from a big regional area meet in Pensacola and saw this. Wanted to share it as this is the beauty of cross country and how it would apply if we used that same spirit in our work and personal lives. These are not my words but as a 7+ year cross country mom, they very well could be. —- What if we lived life like we were all in a cross country meet? What if we watched other people and recognized that we're all just trying to get across the finish line? What if we understood that some people are running as hard as they can but battling illnesses, invisible injuries, and internal struggles? Every step is hard, but they're trying not to quit. What if we cheered for everyone even if they weren't on our team? What if we realized just finishing something, no matter how long it took us or how messy it seemed, was enough? In fact, it was a win. What if we used every race as an opportunity to learn more about ourselves and how we could use each other for support, inspiration, and help to reach our goals? What if we cheered loud for the winner, but even louder for the one who comes in after because they accomplished something great, too? In a world that tells us it's about me, me, me, what if we started living to support everyone brave enough to be in the race? While celebrating Father’s Day this past weekend, the question popped into my mind of ‘What type of legacy do I want to leave for my son?’ I think it is an important question for all of us parents to reflect on. However, in our busy lives, it’s easy to lose sight of what truly matters. Here is the legacy I want my son to know about his dad as it pertains to my career: 1) I stayed true to my values & priorities I have 5 main pillars for my values that I call the F5s: Faith, Family, Fitness, Finances, and Friends.  These pillars shape everything I do, from my career decisions to personal growth. 2) No matter the role or work, I gave it my all This is a gentle reminder for me of the work I want to provide: "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters” Colossians 3:23-24 3) I choose Courage over Comfort All the magic happens outside of our comfort zone. Whether that be starting a new project at work, starting a new campaign, or acquiring another multifamily building all the magic happens outside the comfort zone. I spent this weekend celebrating 8 years with AvalonBay Communities ✨ There are no celebrations with reflections, however, so enjoy 8 life lessons from your favorite AVB enthusiast. 1. The best advocate you have for yourself is you. This doesn’t lessen the value from your supporters or predecessors though, so always cherish them. 2. Money matters. Respect, autonomy, and cultural alignment are also crucial to one’s wellbeing, but… money is a foundation. 3. Check your heart rate. If it’s elevated, take a beat and come back to the situation/email/text later. 4. Lean in to stretch assignments, if the desire and capacity is there; and don’t fear when it’s time to pull back or realign responsibility. You’re not an imposter and you still have value. 5. No one can read your mind. Don’t do yourself the disservice of thinking otherwise. 6. Take care of the personal and professional relationships that you have. Build and strengthen your support group. 7. Approach radical candor with curiosity, whether you are the giver or recipient. Your perspective is not the only one that matters. 8. "Everything ranks below 'are you breathing or not?'" I recently had the opportunity to attend a keynote by professional fisherman, John Hoyer Wisconsin Lutheran College. Hoyer is the only angler with three National Walleye Tour Championship first-place finishes. He is also coming off his first Angler of the Year title. His working career started with cutting the grass and shoveling snow at church. After an unsuccessful stint at North Dakota State University for civil engineering, he turned his summer job of carpentry into a full-time profession. Eighteen years later, he left that steady income and took a leap of faith to pursue his dream of becoming a full-time professional angler on TV. Given all Hoyer's successes, my biggest takeaway had nothing to do with his accolades. Instead, it was a personal philosophy he shared with us that he developed while his late mother was going through cancer treatments: "Everything ranks below 'are you breathing or not?'" That phrase underscores the paramount importance of life itself over all other concerns or priorities. It's a potent reminder to prioritize well-being, to cherish the gift of life, and to seize each moment with purpose. Reflect on this truth. Embrace its power. Let it ignite your passion and drive.
