Monica's Monday Morning Memo...sharing lessons learned and reflections from my prior work week. I continue to be amazed by the range of impacts to our assets and how our field teams rally to safely keep our network functioning for our customers. As part of my NY North Country Safety Expedition", I observed the damage a black bear made to one of our distribution poles near Malone, NY at the Canadian border. The most northern and remote field crew of our NY territory responded to replace the pole and lines and ensure continuity of service. (See damaged pole and responding crew in photo below). As you can imagine, there can be challenges working in such remote areas often where there is no cell phone coverage or quick access to help. I set out on the "NY North Country Safety Expedition" to listen, observe and learn how small crews working remotely, also work safely. Visiting crews from Watertown to Gouverneur to Potsdam and through the Adirondack Park to Saranac Lake, it became evident that a critical factor is the effectiveness of the crew leader. One of #NationalGrid's safety focus areas this year is ensuring our crew leaders feel supported and are prepared to be able to fully execute their critical roles. The crew leader (left in photo) held a thorough job briefing conversation; ensured his crew understood and was ready for the task; educated and supported his crew through the task, all while building an atmosphere of mutual respect, trust and belonging among the crew members. Our department is growing everyday we have taken on so many new partners we stay very busy to make sure our customers are getting what they need to protect there homes . we have such an amazing team more like a big family in this department we stick together. . Work is like a sandcastle competition. People all working diligently on diverse masterpieces that serve a distinct purpose for their moment of need. Unfortunately, many make the mistake of prioritizing the sandcastle as their primary objective, forgetting the castle will eventually be washed away with the tides. As a result, they construct their personal castles at the expense of others, are anxious about and devastated when the tide comes in, and ultimately miss the true value of the experience. In reality, the sustaining value of work will never be found in the castle itself. It’s found in the quality of the relationships you build, the diverse learning opportunities you’ll encounter, and the unique experiences you’ll have along the way. So, go ahead and build your castle, but never forget it will never be where the real magic happens.

If the construction industry is going to attract new talent to the market, its definitely got to get on the ball about outreach and engagement. This can be done through a variety of ways, one being collaboration with schools and colleges. I remember when I was in middle and high school, they had shop class that I took every semester. I was able to learn some basic skills of carpentry that I still apply today (on a much smaller scale compared to yall). Second, we as an industry really need to highlight how bad ass it is to work in construction. Who else builds such amazing buildings that we all use every day. Not to mention, the construction industry provides competitive salary, benefits and the success of a job well done at the end of the day. What are some other ways we can get our younger generation or those looking to transition into the Construction industry interested?
