I created 502 Black Business Week and Black Eats Week to uplift and celebrate Black businesses, but also to remind us of a painful truth—this country has a long history of trying to deny Black prosperity. 116 years ago in August, in 1908, Springfield, Illinois, was the site of a brutal race riot that many don’t even know about. Angry mobs attacked Black neighborhoods, burning homes and businesses to the ground, and killing people simply because they were Black. This violence wasn’t just about hate—it was about trying to erase the progress Black people had made, to destroy any chance of us thriving economically. Events like this, and the destruction of Black Wall Street in Tulsa, show us that our success has always been met with resistance. But despite that, we continue to build, create, and succeed. 502 Black Business Week and Black Eats Week are about honoring that resilience, remembering the struggles our ancestors faced, and ensuring that our businesses today are supported and celebrated. This is our way of saying that no matter what, we will continue to rise.
