In May 2024, for the first time in any Spanish region, international tourist spending per capita in the Madrid region surpassed the €2,000 mark, reaching €2,010. This milestone is a reflect to Madrid’s tourism industry and government success in enhancing its tourism offerings and services, thereby bringing more wealth and quality employment to its citizens. In stark contrast, Catalonia’s tourism industry and government continue to show an inability to leverage international tourism to generate greater economic benefits for its residents. In May 2024, the average expenditure per international tourist in Catalonia was only €1,139. Over the years, the gap of the Madrid region over Catalonia in international tourism spending per capita has more than doubled, widening from 36.6% in October 2015 to 76.4% in May 2024.  The failure to increase the wealth generated by international tourism in Catalonia is the real reason behind growing tourismphobia. It is essential to recognize that the responsibility for tourismphobia lies with the tourism industry and the Catalan government, not the tourists themselves. Madrid, on the other hand, has managed to avoid such negative sentiments by investing in infrastructure, cultural attractions, and strategic tourism development. Glad to see foreign visitors in City of Tartu! In 2023, Tartu welcomed 253,932 guests, marking an increase in foreign visitors by 16,4%. Annika Ojasaar, head of tourism in Tartu, attributed this rise in foreign tourism to strategic marketing efforts in collaboration with Visit Tartu and the Southern Estonia Tourism Cluster. Looking ahead to 2024, a revival in domestic tourism is expected as European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024 program will attract local and international visitors to Tartu.   Moreover, there has been a resurgence in Finnish interest in Tartu, with a substantial rise in visitors from Lithuania and Germany as well. However, domestic tourism experienced a decline, reflecting an 8.3% decrease in Estonians visiting Tartu's lodging facilities compared to the previous year. Despite a decline in domestic tourism, Tartu's average visitor stay has increased, indicating a positive trend in tourism dynamics. GLOBAL TOURISM | prior to the coronavirus outbreak, had seen almost uninterrupted growth for decades. - in 1980, the number of international arrivals was 277 million. - in 2019, nearly reached 1.5 billion internationals arrivals globally. Now, nearly four years after the WHO declared Covid-19 a pandemic, optimism has finally returned to the Tourism industry. According to the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer, global tourism continued its recovery in 2023, ending the year at 88 percent of pre-pandemic levels, with an estimated 1.3 billion international tourist arrivals. The UNWTO now expects international tourism to make a full recovery and pass 1.5 billion globally by the end of 2024. #tourism #2024trends #internationaltravel
