#Hardware_TechPubs #Harware_Technical_Documentation I forgot to mention this information… There are two aspects of h/w technical documentation: ·       Author ·       Illustrator Depending on the organization, the two aspects are either handled by two teams or individual technical writers work on both these aspects for their projects. Authoring is similar for both h/w and s/w technical writing. A deviation about images. Every image can be categorized into two buckets: ·       Vector images: Do not distort even when you zoom the image to the max. ·       Raster images: Get pixelated when you zoom the image. Note: Occasionally, you do get to see mixed images. These contain both vector and raster attributes. Illustrations are 2-dimensional line drawings (vector images) which indicate any one of the following: ·       Product features ·       Dimensions ·       Installation views ·       Exploded view ·       Flow chart ·       Wiring diagrams ·       Cable connections ·       Etc. H/w tech writers believe in the adage “A picture is worth a thousand words”. All the h/w technical documents have a healthy mix of text and illustrations. Installation or Install manual instructs the end-user on installing the product. In many cases, the installation will be done by trained professionals. The document may include the following sections: ·       Package contents: The components/accessories/parts shipped with the product and their respective quantities. It can be depicted using illustrations or text or both. ·       Safety: Informs the potential hazards while assembling the product. ·       Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Suggests the PPE to be worn by the installer to protect themselves from the potential hazards. Examples of PPE are hard hats, safety shoes, safety goggles, etc. ·       Tools required: The tools needed to install the product. ·       Installation: Provides step-by-step instructions to install the product. In case the product can be installed in more than one way, the instructions would specify all the different ways of installing the product. The components of the product are shown in an exploded view, connected by dashed lines showing the assembly of components with one another. The illustrations may come with instructions when the assembly process is complex. If the installation is simple, it can be a one-page illustration-only document. Irrespective of the manual type, some information is standard. The standard information varies from company to company. It may include the part number (of the manual), revision date, copyright info, support/contact information, legal information, etc. 4/n To be continued…
